Facile Bio-Fabrication of Ag-Cu-Co Trimetallic Nanoparticles and Its Fungicidal Activity against Candida auris

Summary: A novel green synthetic route was developed to prepare Ag-Fe bimetallic nanoparticles using aqueous extract of Beta vulgaris L. The nanoparticles showed high antifungal activity against clinical isolates of Candida auris, with potential to inhibit and potentially eradicate the fungus by inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and increasing levels of oxidative stress.

Capric acid secreted by Saccharomyces boulardii influences the susceptibility of Candida albicans to fluconazole and amphotericin B

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of capric acid produced by probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii on the activities of fluconazole and amphotericin B against pathogenic Candida albicans fungus. The results showed that capric acid may be a promising additive in combination with fluconazole, reducing efflux activity of multidrug resistance transporter Cdr1p. However, capric acid alone stimulated ergosterol production in C. albicans, leading to cross resistance towards amphotericin B. It is concluded that amphotericin B should not be administered with dietary supplements containing capric acid or S. boulardii cells.

Silver nanoparticles offer a synergistic effect with fluconazole against fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans by abrogating drug efflux pumps and increasing endogenous ROS

Summary: The study found that silver nanoparticles worked synergistically with fluconazole against fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans, both planktonic cells and biofilms formed in less than 12 hours. Silver nanoparticles treatment down-regulated certain genes associated with fluconazole resistance, decreased membrane ergosterol levels and fluidity, reduced membrane content of certain proteins, and elevated ROS production, all contributing to the synergistic effect. In vivo, the combination of silver nanoparticles and fluconazole significantly reduced fungal burden and improved survival rates in infected mice, indicating a promising strategy for treating fluconazole-resistant fungal infections.

The prepared Cu/Pd hybrid exhibited remarkable catalytic properties for the degradation of 4-Nitrophenol and methylene blue, outperforming its atomic analogue.
