Molecular basis and regulatory mechanisms underlying fungal insecticides' resistance to solar ultraviolet irradiation

Sen-Miao Tong et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the research progress on fungal conidial UV resistance, focusing on the genetic basis of UV resistance in insect pathogen fungi, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying photorepair and photoreactivation of UV-induced DNA lesions in conidia. The study suggests exploring a regulatory network of fungal photoprotection and improving the development and application strategies of UV-resistant fungal insecticides.

Fungal insecticidal activity elevated by non-risky markerless overexpression of an endogenous cysteine-free protein gene in Beauveria bassiana

Ya-Ni Mou et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed a markerless transformation system of Beauveria bassiana based on fungal uridine auxotrophy (Δura3), successfully overexpressed the small cysteine-free protein (cfp) gene, and demonstrated that the overexpression strains showed faster insect-killing action without any change in growth and aerial condition.

Identification of a key G-protein coupled receptor in mediating appressorium formation and fungal virulence against insects

Junmei Shang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the evolution of GPCR genes in the entomopathogenic Metarhizium species, showing an expansion of Pth11-like GPCRs in generalist species. Deletion of MrGpr8 resulted in failure of appressorium formation and loss of virulence during topical infection of insects. The results shed light on understanding fungus-interactions mediated by GPCRs.

Distinctive role of fluG in the adaptation of Beauveria bassiana to insect-pathogenic lifecycle and environmental stresses

Chong-Tao Guo et al.

Summary: Disruption of fluG in Beauveria bassiana leads to limited conidiation defect, which can be alleviated with longer incubation time and is associated with the up-regulation/down-regulation of other related genes. Increased sensitivities to stresses and decreased virulence were observed in Delta fluG strains, indicating the essential role of fluG in fungal adaptation to the insect-pathogenic lifecycle.

A Small Cysteine-Free Protein Acts as a Novel Regulator of Fungal Insect-Pathogenic Lifecycle and Genomic Expression

Ya-Ni Mou et al.

Summary: This study reveals that a cysteine-free protein is essential for the virulence of insect-pathogenic fungi. This protein is located in the nucleus and disruption of it causes a series of cellular events associated with host infection and disease development.
