Effectiveness of Hearing Rehabilitation for Care Home Residents With Dementia: A Systematic Review

Hannah Cross et al.

Summary: This systematic review reports on the effectiveness, barriers, and facilitators of hearing rehabilitation for care home residents with dementia. The findings indicate that hearing rehabilitation can improve communication, quality of life, and reduce agitation for residents. However, symptoms of dementia, time pressures, and lack of staff training pose barriers to implementing hearing rehabilitation. A person-centered approach and increased funding and support for the social care sector are needed.

Estimating the global costs of hearing loss

David McDaid et al.

Summary: The total global economic costs of hearing loss in 2019 exceeded $981 billion, with 47% related to quality of life losses. The majority of costs (57%) were outside of high-income countries, and 6.5% of costs were for children aged 0-14. A scenario analysis showed that a 5% reduction in prevalence of hearing loss could reduce global costs by $49 billion. The study highlights the significant economic consequences of not addressing hearing loss worldwide and the potential benefits of small reductions in its prevalence or severity.

Association Between Central and Peripheral Age-Related Hearing Loss and Different Frailty Phenotypes in an Older Population in Southern Italy

Rodolfo Sardone et al.

Summary: In this cross-sectional study of 1929 participants, peripheral age-related hearing loss was found to be associated with cognitive frailty, while age-related central auditory processing disorder was independently associated with cognitive frailty. This suggests new perspectives for delaying frailty-related processes in older age.

Patterns of hearing changes in women and men from denarians to nonagenarians

Koichiro Wasano et al.

Summary: This study identified standard age-decade and sex-specific pure-tone air-conduction hearing threshold norms for native Japanese speakers across nine age-decades. It found that hearing thresholds at higher frequencies were significantly worse in men in their 20s, while women aged 70 and above had higher thresholds in low frequencies. Additionally, hearing thresholds at 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz tended to deteriorate starting from teenage years through the 50s.
