Fetal Undernutrition Modifies Vascular RAS Balance Enhancing Oxidative Damage and Contributing to Remodeling

Maria Sofia Vieira-Rocha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between vascular renin-angiotensin system (RAS), oxidative damage, and remodeling in fetal programming. The findings suggest that fetal undernutrition induces RAS alterations and oxidative damage, which may contribute to the remodeling of mesenteric arteries and increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular events and hypertension.

Determinants of suboptimal blood pressure control in a multi-ethnic population: The Healthy Life in an Urban Setting (HELIUS) study

Eva L. van der Linden et al.

Summary: Through a study on multi-ethnic populations, we identified female sex, marital status, smoking, alcohol intake, obesity, history of cardiovascular disease, non-adherence to medication, and family history of hypertension as key determinants independently associated with suboptimal blood pressure control. There are significant variations in these determinants among different ethnic groups, with factors like obesity being particularly relevant in Dutch, African Surinamese, Ghanaian, and Turkish populations. Targeting these determinants could potentially improve blood pressure control outcomes.

Sex differences in hypertension: lessons from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR)

Ahmed A. Elmarakby et al.

Summary: Although there have been numerous clinical and experimental studies identifying a sexual dimorphism in blood pressure control, the specific mechanisms underlying these differences remain unclear. Previous research has suggested that differential regulation of adrenergic receptors, the renin-angiotensin system, oxidative stress, nitric oxide bioavailability and immune cells play a role in sex differences in blood pressure control in SHR.
