Electron transfer-driven single and multi-enzyme biofuel cells for self-powering and energy bioscience

Saikat Dutta et al.

Summary: Single enzyme fuel cells have the unique capability of degrading organics and generating electricity. Factors such as bioelectrode fabrication, enzyme conformation, and electron transport mechanism significantly influence the power density. These fuel cells have advanced applications in areas such as waste-water treatment, energy storage, and self-powering biosensors.

Substrate mediated dissolution of redox active nanoparticles; electron transfer over long distances

Ruo-Chen Xie et al.

Summary: Reflective dark field microscopy was used to observe the decrease in light scattered from Ag nanoparticles immobilised on various solid substrates, with the physical origin of this transformation shown to be the electrochemical dissolution of the metal nanoparticles. The dissolution kinetics of the surface-supported metal nanoparticles on different substrates were compared, demonstrating the redox-driven dissolution of Ag nanoparticles with electron transfer to dioxygen being catalyzed by conductive substrates.

Enhanced Cathodic Electrochemiluminescence of Luminol on Iron Electrodes

Minghui Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that luminol and its derivative exhibit strong cathodic electrochemiluminescence on iron and stainless steel electrodes with hydrogen peroxide, while no luminescence was observed on other classic electrode materials. The cathodic ECL signal of L-012 is comparable to the classically used anodic ECL emission, and dual bright ECL emissions with L-012 can be obtained simultaneously in oxidation and in reduction on iron materials.

Opto-Electrochemical Dissolution Reveals Coccolith Calcium Carbonate Content

Minjun Yang et al.

Summary: This study introduces an opto-electrochemical acid titration method for measuring the mass range of coccoliths secreted by calcifying marine phytoplankton, showing variation in mass among four different species. The scientific breakthrough is expected to enable continuous monitoring and reporting of coccolith calcification in the changing marine environment without the need for species-specific knowledge or calibration.

Real-time Conversion of Electrochemical Currents into Fluorescence Signals Using 8-Hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic Acid (HPTS) and Amplex Red as Fluorogenic Reporters

Rabia Djoumer et al.

Summary: This paper discusses an instrumental scheme for translating electrochemical reactions at an electrode into fluorescent signals under potentiostatic control. Using water-soluble fluorescent reporter systems, the device is shown to enhance performance, converting both stationary and transient, cathodic and anodic electrochemical currents into fluorescence. Additionally, it demonstrates the conversion of pure capacitive currents into fluorescence, highlighting the rarely observed coupling between a faradaic reaction at one electrode and capacitive charging at another.

Emission from the working and counter electrodes under co-reactant electrochemiluminescence conditions

Natasha S. Adamson et al.

Summary: A new method for exploring potential-dependent multi-colour co-reactant electrochemiluminescence was presented, involving measurements of potentials, current, and emission. The study provided new insights into multifaceted ECL systems, including the understanding of counter electrode potential properties and mechanism-based rationalization of interactions between different metal-complex luminophores.
