Impact of solute charge and diffusion coefficient on electromigration and mixing in porous media

Massimo Rolle et al.

Summary: The study focuses on electromigration and provides experimental evidence on the impact of compound-specific properties on macroscopic electrokinetic transport. The experimental outcomes demonstrate that both compound-specific diffusivity and ion charge affect the transport of selected color tracer plumes.

Influence of degree of compaction on electrokinetic remediation of unsaturated soil

Chengwei Yin et al.

Summary: The compaction degree of soil has a significant impact on the electrical current, migration velocity of the voltage front, and water transport mechanism in the electrokinetic process. Soil with lower compaction degree exhibits higher electrical current and faster migration velocity of the voltage front compared to soil with higher compaction degree. Hydralic and electrokinetic driving forces both play a role in water transport in unsaturated soil, with the electrokinetic driving force being dominant in soils with higher compaction degree.

Effective remediation of heavy metals in contaminated soil by electrokinetic technology incorporating reactive filter media

Romina Ghobadi et al.

Summary: The research aims to develop an enhanced EK treatment method by incorporating a compost-based RFM with advantages of low-cost and strong affinity for heavy metals, to test and improve the treatment efficiency for multiple heavy metals in natural soil. Experimental results show that the electric current and treatment time have a significant positive impact on the removal of Zn, Cd, and Mn ions, while changing the amount of RFM has an insignificant effect on heavy metals removal efficiency.

Experimental and Numerical studies on remediation of mixed metal-contaminated sediments by electrokinetics focusing on fractionation changes

Arulpoomalai Ayyanar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to treat heavy metal-contaminated sediments using various enhancing agents through the electrokinetic remediation technique to optimize cost and treatment duration. A numerical model was developed incorporating electrokinetic transport phenomena and geochemical processes to predict treatment duration and scale up the EKR process. The study found the optimal order of enhancing agents for heavy metal removal and identified a parametric study on electrode distance for full-scale EKR treatment.

Pore-Scale Modeling of Electrokinetics in Geomaterials

Pikee Priya et al.

Summary: Pore-scale finite-volume continuum models are used to predict electrokinetic properties of different shapes arrays, with calculations suggesting that particle aspect ratio and orientation can affect the electrical and hydraulic tortuosity of porous media. The models also predict permeability and show potential for applications such as decontamination and desalination.

Scale-up of electrokinetic permeable reactive barriers for the removal of organochlorine herbicide from spiked soils

S. Maldonado et al.

Summary: The study shows that the PRB-EKSF process mainly relies on electrokinetic transport and dehalogenation for treating contaminated soil, while the adsorption on GAC is not as crucial as expected. In the pilot scale, a significant amount of clopyralid remained in the soil after treatment, and the transport of volatile compounds into the atmosphere was promoted.

Integrating Process-Based Reactive Transport Modeling and Machine Learning for Electrokinetic Remediation of Contaminated Groundwater

Summary: The article introduces a method of using machine learning surrogate models trained on limited outputs of process-based reactive transport simulations to predict the evolution of complex systems in subsurface porous media. By developing a response surface surrogate framework using an artificial neural network, it is shown that the surrogate model can effectively capture and analyze the complex dynamics of electrokinetic remediation.

Analytical Investigation of Electroosmotic Consolidation in Unsaturated Soils Considering the Coupling Effect and a Nonuniform Initial Water Content

L. J. Wang et al.

Summary: The analytical solution developed in this study considers coupled deformation and decreasing effective voltage in one-dimensional unsaturated soil due to electroosmosis. Laboratory tests and parametric studies show an increase in coupling effect, the influence of initial water content distribution on consolidation rate, and a shortened completion time of electroosmotic consolidation with decreasing effective voltage over time.
