Hybrid scanning electrochemical cell microscopy-interference reflection microscopy (SECCM-IRM): tracking phase formation on surfaces in small volumes

Dimitrios Valavanis et al.

Summary: The combination of SECCM and IRM techniques allows for the study of interfacial processes with high spatial and temporal resolution. SECCM confines reactions to specific regions on a surface, while IRM detects processes close to the substrate. This technique enables real-time monitoring of SECCM meniscus and processes at the electrode/electrolyte interface, providing valuable insights into phase formation processes.

Electrocatalysis Goes Nuts

Andrew R. Akbashev

Summary: Researchers often overlook the complexity and usability of nanoelectrocatalysts with outstanding performance, leading to a lack of meaningful interpretation and scientific insight in previous studies. This article suggests that experiments should be designed to minimize the complexity of electrode materials in order to obtain interpretable electrochemical responses. Greater recognition of the challenges in this field will help improve the quality of research in electrocatalysis.

The Hidden Role of the Supporting Electrode for Creating Heterogeneity in Single Entity Electrochemistry

Natalia Y. Molina et al.

Summary: Single entity electrochemistry experiments aim to understand how heterogeneity affects nanoparticle performance. This study shows that the commonly used supporting electrode, ITO, can introduce significant heterogeneity in nanoparticle electrochemical responses. The electrodissolution kinetics of gold nanoparticles on ITO thin films from two different suppliers were compared, revealing marked differences and poor reproducibility within the same lot number. These findings highlight the importance of considering the supporting electrode in single entity structure-function studies.

Operando Methods in Electrocatalysis

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysis is crucial for advancing renewable energy technologies, and understanding the structure and reaction mechanisms of electrocatalysts at electrode-electrolyte interfaces is fundamental. In situ and operando techniques, such as operando synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and in situ atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy, provide valuable insights into the interfacial structural and compositional changes under reaction conditions, aiding in the study of charge transfer kinetics and reaction mechanisms. The continuous development of these techniques will contribute significantly to establishing structure/composition-reactivity correlations of electrocatalysts at unprecedented atomic-scale and molecular levels under realistic, real-time reaction conditions.

Characterising Fickian diffusion on the surface of a sphere

Owen Orrick et al.

Summary: This study investigates single-entity electrochemical analysis involving Fickian charge diffusion over the surface of a (truncated) sphere through numerical simulation. The changing shape of the flux-time transient as diffusion regimes change over the sphere surface from the point of charge injection is characterized using a newly introduced diffusion indicator, alpha. The indicator effectively illuminates the transition of diffusion patterns from divergent near the injection point to linear at the sphere circumference, and then to convergent before being limited by the thinlayer effect.

Jean-Francois Lemineur et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made towards designing sustainable and efficient nanocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction, but there is a need for the real-time observation and quantification of gas nanobubble formation. This study utilized interference reflection microscopy coupled with electrochemistry and optical modeling to analyze individual nanobubbles' geometry and growth rate. The results showed that nanobubbles cover Pt nanoparticles and steadily grow on the electrode surface, raising questions about the relationship between nanobubble growth and electrochemical activity.

Correlative operando microscopy of oxygen evolution electrocatalysts

J. Tyler Mefford et al.

Summary: Transition metal (oxy)hydroxides are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, with their properties evolving dynamically and heterogeneously with applied voltage. By studying single-crystalline beta-Co(OH)(2) platelet particles, researchers have found that the particles change structure and composition from inactive to active states as the voltage increases, ultimately linking bulk ion-insertion with surface catalytic activity. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding the nanoscale structure of electrocatalysts in predicting and optimizing their oxygen evolution activity.

Deciphering Competitive Routes for Nickel-Based Nanoparticle Electrodeposition by an Operando Optical Monitoring

Louis Godeffroy et al.

Summary: The electrodeposition of nickel nanoparticles on indium tin oxide (ITO) is complex and can be differentiated by optical microscopy and SEM imaging, revealing the dynamics of two different NP populations: metallic nickel and Ni(OH)(2). The formation of these NPs is governed by the competition between Ni2+ and water reduction, resulting in self-terminated growth at the single NP level. This information is often obscured in ensemble averaged measurements.
