Manipulating Interfacial Stability Via Absorption-Competition Mechanism for Long-Lifespan Zn Anode

Meijia Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, aromatic aldehyde additives were used to modulate the interface reactions between Zn anode and electrolyte in Zn-based energy storage devices. By competing with redox reactions, these additives prevented the decomposition of active H2O and uncontrollable growth of Zn dendrites, resulting in improved stability of the devices.

Direct Self-Assembly of MXene on Zn Anodes for Dendrite-Free Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Nannan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an ultrathin and uniform MXene layer was assembled on the surface of zinc anodes using an in situ spontaneously reducing/assembling strategy. The integrated MXene layer reduced the zinc nucleation energy barrier and provided a more uniformly distributed electric field, resulting in low voltage hysteresis and excellent cycling stability with dendrite-free behaviors in zinc-ion batteries.

Unveiling the Origin of Alloy-Seeded and Nondendritic Growth of Zn for Rechargeable Aqueous Zn Batteries

Yamin Zhang et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous zinc anodes are attracting attention for their safety, low cost, and high theoretical volumetric capacity. Zinc anodes in aqueous electrolytes often suffer from dendritic metal deposition, with the regulation of Zn using Zn-alloying metals as a reported solution. By introducing Ag on Zn anodes, uniform Zn deposition was achieved, leading to improved cycling performance. This alloy-seeding design principle could potentially enhance the rechargeability of other metal anodes.

Dendrite-free zinc anode enabled by zinc-chelating chemistry

Minghe Luo et al.

Summary: This study utilized a chelating agent, BIS-TRIS, to regulate the solvation sheath structure of Zn2+ in aqueous Zn-ion batteries, restricting Zn2+ 2D diffusion and inhibiting dendrite growth. Partial substitution of water with chelator also suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction. This strategy led to the achievement of a stable Zn cell and aqueous Zn/MnO2 battery.
