Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Genetic and Epigenetic Characteristics of Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Associated Colorectal Cancer

Kristiina Rajamaki et al.

Summary: By comprehensively characterizing IBD-associated tumorigenesis using multiple high-throughput approaches, distinct mechanisms of WNT pathway dysregulation were identified in IBD-CRC, which skew the tumors towards a mesenchymal subtype. Additionally, epigenetic modifications and noncoding mutations in specific genes were found in IBD-CRC, highlighting further differences compared to sCRC.

Cancer incidence, mortality, and burden in China: a time-trend analysis and comparison with the United States and United Kingdom based on the global epidemiological data released in 2020

Haibo Qiu et al.

Summary: Cancer is a major cause of death and economic burden in China, with lower incidence but higher mortality and DALY rates compared to the US and UK. The cancer spectrum in China is changing, with increasing burden of certain cancers and a shift towards patterns seen in developed countries.

CD147 receptor is essential for TFF3-mediated signaling regulating colorectal cancer progression

Hong-Yong Cui et al.

Summary: Major gaps in understanding the molecular mechanisms of colorectal cancer progression and mucosal repair have hindered therapeutic development for gastrointestinal disorders. TFF3 plays a crucial role in CRC progression and mucosal repair, with upregulated TFF3 predicting worse survival rates in CRC patients. The interaction between TFF3 and CD147 enhances CRC progression by activating STAT3 and PTGS2, leading to increased migration, proliferation, and invasion of cancer cells.

MYC protein interactors in gene transcription and cancer

Corey Lourenco et al.

Summary: The transcription factor and oncoprotein MYC plays a critical role in many human cancers, with its ability to interact with multiple proteins enabling it to regulate key control points of gene transcription. This 'coalition model' of protein interactions allows MYC to function as a potent oncoprotein, and provides a potential therapeutic target for impeding MYC oncogenesis.
