Study on the Vortex in a Pump Sump and Its Influence on the Pump Unit

Xijie Song et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the internal pressure characteristics of floor-attached vortex (FAV) and its impact on the pump unit using previously verified numerical simulation method and experiment. The research finds that the pressure in the vortex core decreases over time and can cause local cavitation. The study provides important theoretical guidance for understanding vortex characteristics and optimizing pump design.

Enhancing the performance of gravitational water vortex turbine by flow simulation analysis

Dylan S. Edirisinghe et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the performance of the vortex turbine setup inside a conical basin structure using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The relationship between flow behavior and performance was analyzed for different configurations of vortex turbine blades. The study found that blade inclination and optimal blade height play a significant role in enhancing performance. The horizontally curved blade showed slightly better performance than the vertical twist blade for the original design, but the vertically twisted blade performed well when the drain diameter of the basin structure increased.

Numerical Simulation and Analysis of the Flow Characteristics of the Roof-Attached Vortex (RAV) in a Closed Pump Sump

Bowen Zhang et al.

Summary: Unsteady numerical simulation and visual experiment were conducted to investigate the formation mechanism of the roof-attached vortex (RAV) on the roof of a closed sump. The results showed that RAVs mainly occurred between the pump device and the rear wall of the closed sump. The vorticity intensity at the roof was more significant, indicating that the roof was more likely to induce vortex. The study provided theoretical guidance for the optimal design of closed sumps.

Experimental study on wave-structure interaction of an offshore intake well with a curtain wall

V. Prabu Kumar et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the wave-structure interaction of a caisson type offshore intake well with regular waves. Results show that wave run-up and rundown are highest when the scattering parameter is at its minimum, and increasing relative wave height leads to an increase in wave run-up on certain faces. Additionally, the insertion of a curtain wall can reduce free surface oscillation at the pumping chamber.

Numerical Modeling of Soil Erosion with Three Wall Laws at the Soil-Water Interface

Hatim El Assad et al.

Summary: The study investigates erosion phenomenon at the water/soil interface, identifying factors influencing erosion rate, particularly at the critical points of erosion on both ends of the hole. By focusing on clay soil, the study addresses non-uniform erosion and the impact of wall laws on wall-shear stress.

Comprehensive multi-criteria evaluation of water source heat pump systems in terms of building type, water source, and water intake distance

Yujun Jung et al.

Summary: The performance of water source heat pump (WSHP) systems for heating or cooling buildings heavily relies on factors such as heating and cooling demands, the water source used, and the distance to the water source. Energy savings and carbon emissions are more reliant on the water source rather than building type, with the most influential factor in economic feasibility being the type of building. Water intake distance, particularly vertical distance, significantly impacts energy, environment, and economic feasibility criteria.
