Detection and genome characterization of bovine kobuvirus (BKV) in faecal samples from diarrhoeic calves in Quebec, Canada

Christian Savard et al.

Summary: Kobuviruses infect the gastrointestinal tract of different animals and have been found in faecal samples from diarrhoeic cattle in many countries, including Canada. A study in Quebec detected BKV in diarrhoeic calves, which was more common than other known enteric calf pathogens. Further genomic characterization and surveillance are needed to monitor BKV in cattle worldwide.

Bovine kobuvirus-A comprehensive review

Lili Hao et al.

Summary: Bovine kobuvirus (BKV), a non-enveloped RNA virus, has been detected in 13 countries across four continents, potentially causing neonatal calf diarrhoea. Further research, including animal challenge studies, is urgently needed to understand the pathogenicity of BKV.

Severe outbreak of bovine neonatal diarrhea in a dairy calf rearing unit with multifactorial etiology

Alais M. Dall Agnol et al.

Summary: A severe neonatal diarrhea outbreak with high morbidity and mortality rates in a dairy calf rearing unit was found to have an etiological diversity with mixed infections of viral, bacterial, and protozoan agents. The most frequent infectious agent detected was bovine kobuvirus, and histopathological analysis revealed chronic lymphocytic enteritis in one calf with diarrhea. Improved health management practices are crucial for the success of calf rearing units.

Molecular Survey on Kobuviruses in Domestic and Wild Ungulates From Northwestern Italian Alps

Barbara Di Martino et al.

Summary: Kobuviruses (KoVs) have been identified in various animal species, indicating a potential exchange of viruses. Screening of fecal samples from wild and domestic ungulates showed detection of KoVs RNA in wild boars, chamois, and goats. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that different strains of KoVs may cluster within different species categories.
