Enteric Methane Emissions and Animal Performance in Dairy and Beef Cattle Production: Strategies, Opportunities, and Impact of Reducing Emissions

Byeng-Ryel Min et al.

Summary: This review evaluates options for mitigating methane emissions from dairy and beef cattle on a quantitative basis and integrates approaches in feeding, rumen fermentation profiles, and rumen microbiota changes. The results show positive correlations between methane emissions and factors such as feed intake, milk production, and acetate/propionate ratio.

Feed additives as a strategic approach to reduce enteric methane production in cattle: modes of action, effectiveness and safety

M. Honan et al.

Summary: Increasing concern over GHG contributions from cattle is driving the livestock industry to improve sustainability goals. Enteric methane production is a major contributor to GHG emissions and research on feed additives is showing promise in reducing CH4 emissions. Feed additives work by either inhibiting methanogenesis or modifying the rumen environment, leading to a reduction in CH4 production.

Influence of three microbial feed additives of Megasphaera elsdenii, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus sp. on ruminal methane and carbon dioxide production, and biofermentation kinetics

E. Direkvandi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of microbial additives on biogas production and ruminal biofermentation parameters in a heterofermenter system. Results showed that certain treatments significantly increased biogas production and reduced methane and carbon dioxide proportions, leading to a decreased risk of ruminal acidosis.
