Association of the gut microbiota and fecal short-chain fatty acids with skeletal muscle mass and strength in children

Fengyan Chen et al.

Summary: This study found associations between gut microbiota and fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with skeletal muscle mass and strength in healthy Chinese children aged 6-9 years. Children with higher fecal butyric acid, acetic acid, and total SCFA levels exhibited higher muscle mass and muscle quality, but these associations may largely depend on total body fat content after adjustment.

Alterations in intestinal microbiota composition coincide with impaired intestinal morphology and dysfunctional ileal immune response in growing-finishing pigs under constant chronic heat stress

Yunxia Xiong et al.

Summary: The results of this study showed that constant chronic heat stress significantly reduced the average daily gain and average daily feed intake in growing-finishing pigs, while also causing hyperpyrexia. The intestinal morphological observations indicated a decrease in villus and microvillus height, along with an increase in the expression of heat shock protein 70 under heat stress conditions. Additionally, the study found alterations in the composition of intestinal microbiota, with reductions in certain microbial populations associated with performance and increases in others related to intestinal morphological injuries and ileal immune response.

Characterisation of and risk factors for extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) in an equine hospital with a special reference to an outbreak caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae ST307:CTX-M-1

Katariina Thomson et al.

Summary: This study focused on describing the epidemiology and microbiological characteristics of ESBL-E from equine patients and analyzing putative risk factors for being positive for ESBL-E during an outbreak of Klebsiella pneumoniae ST307. The occurrence of an outbreak caused by a pathogenic ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae ST307 strain highlights the importance of epidemiological surveillance of ESBL-E in veterinary hospitals. Limiting the length of hospitalisation for equine patients may reduce the risk of spread of ESBL-E. The nasogastric tube was found to be an important potential source of acquiring ESBL-E.

Summary: A.baumannii - A. calcoaceticus complex infections, especially in intensive care units, are associated with high mortality rates. Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Acinetobacter species is rare but with notable morbidity and mortality, often due to antimicrobial resistance. This systematic review found that A. baumannii - A. calcoaceticus complex is the most common causative pathogen in IE cases, with common clinical presentations including fever, sepsis, and heart failure, and treatment usually involves aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, and carbapenems.
