Prevalence and psychosocial risk factors of nonsuicidal self-injury among adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak

Wen-Ching Tang et al.

Summary: This research examined the prevalence of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) during the COVID-19 outbreak among junior high school students in Taiwan and identified psychosocial risk factors. The study found that the prevalence of NSSI was 40.9% during the COVID-19 outbreak. The results indicated that self-injurers were mostly female and scored higher in neuroticism, depression, impulsivity, alexithymia, virtual social support, and dissatisfaction with academic performance, while scoring lower in subjective well-being, self-esteem, actual social support, and family function. The logistic regression analysis revealed that high neuroticism, low self-esteem, high virtual social support, high impulsivity, and high alexithymia were independent predictors of NSSI.

Associations of being bullied and non-suicidal self-injury with suicidal behaviors among Chinese adolescents

Shuai Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examines the independent and interactive associations between being bullied and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) with suicidal behaviors among junior and senior high school students in China. The results show significant correlations between being bullied and NSSI with suicidal behaviors, with NSSI increasing the risk among adolescents being bullied. These findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive intervention programs that consider individual, social, and institutional factors, as well as the role of the perpetrator, in addressing adolescent suicidal behaviors.

Prevalence and Correlates of Suicidal Ideation and Deliberate Self-harm in Canadian Adolescents During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic

Brianna J. Turner et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, 44% of Canadian adolescents reported experiencing suicidal ideation since the start of the outbreak, while 32% reported engaging in deliberate self-harm. Those who identified as transgender, non-binary, or gender fluid, did not live with both parents, or reported psychiatric concerns or frequent cannabis use were more likely to exhibit suicidal ideation and deliberate self-harm.

Anxiety symptoms mediates the influence of cybervictimization on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: The moderating effect of self-control

Jianjun Zhu et al.

Summary: The study identified a longitudinal association between cybervictimization and NSSI, with anxiety symptoms mediating this relationship, and self-control moderating the effects. These findings suggest implications for preventive interventions aimed at reducing NSSI among at-risk adolescents.

Depression as a mediator between frequent nightmares and nonsuicidal self-injury among adolescents: a 3-wave longitudinal model

Zhen-Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that frequent nightmares in adolescents have a mediating effect on self-harm behavior through depression, and gender does not significantly moderate the relationship between nightmares and self-harm behavior. Therefore, assessing and treating frequent nightmares and depression in adolescents is important for preventing self-harm.

Depression, anxiety and associated factors among Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak: a comparison of two cross-sectional studies

Xu Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that during the COVID-19 epidemic, the prevalence of depression and anxiety among Chinese adolescents significantly increased. Female gender, senior secondary school enrollment, and concerns about entering a higher grade were positively associated with depression and anxiety. Conversely, adequate sleep duration, regular exercise, good study efficiency, and living in provinces with fewer confirmed COVID-19 cases were negatively associated with depression and anxiety among adolescents.

Anxiety and Depression in Chinese Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Meta-Analysis

Yaoyao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that Chinese students experienced high levels of anxiety and depression symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic, with university students and middle school students in high-risk areas being particularly vulnerable. Comprehensive and targeted psychological interventions should be developed to address the mental health needs of students, especially in high-risk areas and during the late stages of the pandemic.

Bullying Experiences and Nonsuicidal Self-injury among Chinese Adolescents: A Longitudinal Moderated Mediation Model

Nini Wu et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between bullying experiences and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), finding that different types of bullying experiences can increase the likelihood of NSSI through indirect pathways involving peer acceptance and depressive symptoms. These effects were weaker for adolescents with higher levels of psychological resilience, with bully-victims showing the most evident direct and indirect effects among the three groups.
