Experiments and analysis on the influence of multiple closed cemented natural fractures on hydraulic fracture propagation in a tight sandstone reservoir

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of closed cemented natural fractures on the propagation behavior of hydraulic fracture in tight sandstone formations through tri-axial hydraulic fracturing experiments. Four types of interactions between hydraulic fractures and closed cemented pre-existing fractures were identified. The most complicated interaction is observed when the angle between the maximum principal horizontal stress direction and closed cemented pre-existing fracture network is between 30 to 60 degrees.
