Two-dimensional Mapping of Bulk Residual Stress Using Cut Mouth Opening Displacement

C. R. Chighizola et al.

Summary: This paper extends prior work on mapping biaxial residual stress in plate-like samples by applying a new CMOD slitting method, which successfully constructs two-dimensional maps of residual stress. Experimental results demonstrate the reliability of the CMOD technique, with CMOD and BFS measurements showing consistent results and CMOD slitting being more favorable in narrow samples.

Intermethod Comparison and Evaluation of Measured Near Surface Residual Stress in Milled Aluminum

C. R. Chighizola et al.

Summary: The study compared three techniques - hole-drilling, slotting, and sin(2)(psi) XRD - for evaluating near surface residual stress (NSRS) in aluminum parts, showing general agreement in results. Depth of NSRS increases with feed per tooth and is unaffected by cutting speed.

Analysis of machining-induced residual stresses of milled aluminum workpieces, their repeatability, and their resulting distortion

Daniel Weber et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of machining on residual stresses in thin-walled monolithic aluminum workpieces and their repeatability. It was found that stable machining conditions lead to better repeatability of MIRS, while unstable machining conditions result in worse repeatability. The experiments show that more and/or deeper MIRS cause more distortion in the workpieces.
