The relationship between the gut microbiota, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and erectile dysfunction

Giorgio Ivan Russo et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the role of gut microbiota in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and erectile dysfunction (ED). Gut microbiota modifications can affect prostate health through immune system activation and the production of proinflammatory cytokines, while they can also contribute to the onset of ED by altering hormone levels and metabolic profiles.

Prostate diseases and microbiome in the prostate, gut, and urine

Summary: The microbiome in various organs, especially in the genitourinary system, plays a significant role in both benign and malignant diseases of the prostate. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between the urogenital microbiome and prostate pathogenesis.

The Urinary Tract Microbiome in Male Genitourinary Diseases: Focusing on Benign Prostate Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Myung Soo Kim et al.

Summary: The human body is sterile during gestation, but becomes host to a variety of microorganisms after birth. Recent studies have found evidence of microorganisms in human urine, even in the absence of clinical infection. There is an association between urinary tract microbiota and lower urinary tract symptoms in women, but the relevance in men is not yet established.

The impact of urine microbiota in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms

Hsiang-Ying Lee et al.

Summary: This study suggests that dysbiosis of urine microbiota may be associated with the development of BPH and the severity of LUTS. The abundance of the top ten bacterial genera present in the urine samples of the BPH group were identified. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed certain bacterial genera in urine samples correlated with high IPSS and severe storage and voiding symptoms.

Urinary Microbiome: Yin and Yang of the Urinary Tract

Virginia Perez-Carrasco et al.

Summary: The application of next generation sequencing techniques has revealed that the urinary tract is not sterile, contrary to previous beliefs. Microbial communities in the urinary tract play a crucial role in maintaining health and are associated with various urinary pathologies. Understanding the urinary microbiome in health and disease could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Summary: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a major disease affecting the quality of life in middle-aged and older men, with unclear pathogenesis. Chronic inflammation may play a crucial role in its development and symptom induction.

The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio of the human gut microbiota is associated with prostate enlargement

Kentaro Takezawa et al.

Summary: This study found a higher proportion of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria in the gut microbiota of patients with prostate enlargement, while patients without enlargement had a higher proportion of Bacteroidetes. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio of the gut microbiota was associated with prostate enlargement.

Urobiome: An outlook on the metagenome of urological diseases

Rachel Shoemaker et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the urinary tract hosts a complex microbiome, which is associated with urinary diseases, but whether the changes are causative or correlative remains uncertain. Further research on healthy vs. diseased microbiomes, the effects of antibiotic treatments, and the urinary mycobiome will be crucial in understanding the relationship between the urinary microbiome and human health.
