Controls of marine shale gas accumulation in the eastern periphery of the Sichuan Basin, South China

Zhaodong Xi et al.

Summary: This study examines the mechanisms behind the accumulation of shale gas deposits in the eastern periphery of the Sichuan Basin, focusing on the Niutitang, Wufeng, and Longmaxi formations. The lower members of the Niutitang and Wufeng formations show high hydrocarbon generation potential and good reservoir properties, while the upper members of the Niutitang and Longmaxi formations are more suitable as cap rocks.

Pore changes of slickwater-containing shale under supercritical CO2 treatment

Yiyu Lu et al.

Summary: The application of liquid CO2-slickwater hybrid fracturing technology can improve the energy-enhancing efficiency and fracturing fluid flowback efficiency of shale reservoirs. However, the retention of supercritical CO2 (ScCO2) fluid and slickwater in reservoirs after fracturing limits the understanding of changes in shale pore structure, which affects the evaluation of gas adsorption, transportation behaviors, and CO2 sequestration capacity in shale reservoirs. Therefore, the influences of ScCO2-slickwater coupling effect on shale pore structure were analyzed using various analytical methods.

Compatibility characteristics of fracturing fluid and shale oil reservoir: A case study of the first member of Qingshankou Formation, northern Songliao Basin, Northeast China

Boyang Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of physical simulation experiments to reveal the effects of different fracturing fluids on shale oil reservoirs. The results indicate that guar gum fracturing fluid can enhance the pore connectivity of shale and has the lowest stress sensitivity. The research results are of great significance in guiding the fracturing operation of shale oil wells.

Effect of fluid-shale interactions on shales micromechanics: Nanoindentation experiments and interpretation from geochemical perspective

Lingping Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of water saturation on surface energy and micro-fracture propagation in shale samples with different mineral compositions using nano-indentation techniques and geochemical modeling. The results show that decreasing salinity decreases the indentation modulus of shale samples, and the degree of reduction varies with mineralogy. Thermodynamics calculations suggest that the shift of the disjoining pressure isotherm likely plays a key role in shale weakening.

Pore Characterization of Pyrite in the Longmaxi Formation Shale in the Upper Yangtze Area of China

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: Pyrite is widely distributed in the Longmaxi marine shale in the Upper Yangtze area of China and has an important influence on shale gas enrichment. This study examines the pore characteristics of pyrite in the Longmaxi Formation shale using field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results show that pyrite framboids contribute to the shale reservoir pore system, but their contribution degree is low.

Distribution characteristics and oil mobility thresholds in lacustrine shale reservoir: Insights from N2 adsorption experiments on samples prior to and following hydrocarbon extraction

Long-Hui Bai et al.

Summary: The pore structure and oil content of shales have a significant impact on oil mobility and enrichment. This study focuses on lacustrine shale samples from the Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin. The analysis of mineral composition and organic matter reveals the development of nano-scale organic pores in the shale samples, with oil primarily found in pore spaces smaller than 10 nm. High oil mobility is observed when TOCo > 2.0 wt% and EOM > 1.0 wt%, indicating prospective drilling targets in the Qingshankou Formation shale.

A Critical Review of the Physicochemical Impacts of Water Chemistry on Shale in Hydraulic Fracturing Systems

Hasan Javed Khan et al.

Summary: In hydraulic fracturing of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, the choice of water chemistry, including produced water, has a significant impact on the transport and geochemical properties of shales. The high salinity fluid used can create both benefits and complications in controlling mechanisms such as shale softening, mineral dissolution, mineral precipitation, fines migration, and wettability alteration.

Pore evolution model and diagenetic evolution sequence of the Mesoproterozoic Xiamaling shale in Zhangjiakou, Hebei

Liangwei Xu et al.

Summary: Research on diagenesis and evolution in sandstone reservoirs is more prevalent compared to shale reservoirs, particularly immature and low-maturity marine shales. This study focused on the Xiamaling shale, analyzing its geochemical and mineral properties, pore structure, and evolution with burial history. The findings showed a sequence of smectite to illite-smectite to illite and chlorite, with decreasing kaolinite content as maturity increases, as well as changes in hydrocarbon expulsion threshold and porosity evolution.

Effect of salinity on the kinetics of pyrite dissolution in oxygenated fluids at 60 °C and implications for hydraulic fracturing

Veerle Vandeginste et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of salinity on the rate of pyrite oxidative dissolution by fluids and found a correlation between pyrite dissolution rate and redox potential at 60 degrees C. The impact of salinity on pyrite oxidation rate was found to be less significant compared to redox potential and temperature. Understanding factors controlling pyrite oxidation kinetics may help in predicting environmental and engineering impacts of hydraulic fracturing fluids injection in shale formations.

Experimental study of the influence of water-based fracturing fluids on the pore structure of coal

Sheng Xue et al.

Summary: The intrusion of water-based fracturing fluid reduces the pore volume and pore area of coal, while the residue of VES fracturing fluid may change the shape of coal pores. The evolution of the fractal dimension of the coal pore system after fracturing-fluid treatment shows that the residue of the fracturing fluid adheres primarily to the relatively rough region of the pore wall. There is no significant chemical reaction between the water-based fracturing fluids and Illinois coal.

Estimating Organic-Rich Shale Fractal Dimensions from Gas Adsorption Isotherms: Combining Different Methods Leads to More Reliable Values and Insight

David A. Wood

Summary: This study evaluates the mathematical relationships between different methods used to determine the pore-surface fractal dimension in organic-rich shales, and finds that the D values obtained from the FHH and WL methods are more consistent compared to the NM method. A novel 10-step protocol is proposed for a more thorough determination of shale D values, incorporating all three methods and involving graphical analysis to expose uncertainties. This protocol aims to derive reliable D values for future research comparing with key shale properties.
