Self-Assembled NBR/Nomex Nanofibers as Lightweight Rubbery Nonwovens for Hindering Delamination in Epoxy CFRPs

Emanuele Maccaferri et al.

Summary: In this study, concerns about the impact of nanomodification on the thermomechanical properties of composite laminates were addressed by using rubbery nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)/Nomex mixed nanofibers. Stable noncrosslinked nanofibers were produced via single-needle electrospinning, leading to significant improvement in the interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRPs with rubbery nanofiber modifications. The different nanofibrous morphologies demonstrated varying effects on delamination resistance, with quasi-core-shell nanofibers providing the best reinforcing action.

Combinatorial effects of coral addition and plasma treatment on the properties of chitosan/polyethylene oxide nanofibers intended for bone tissue engineering

Parinaz Saadat Esbah Tabaei et al.

Summary: By adding coral to electrospun chitosan/polyethylene oxide nanofibers and subjecting them to plasma surface modifications, the wettability of the nanofibers was significantly enhanced, leading to improved osteoblast performance and cell adhesion. The ability of the fibers to trigger calcium phosphate growth was predicted, with nanocrystals depositing on the fiber surfaces without blocking the pores. Overall, the multifaceted plasma-treated Coral/CS/PEO nanofibers are expected to revolutionize the field of bone tissue engineering.

Applying Acoustic Emission Technique for Detecting Various Damages Occurred in PCL Nanomodified Composite Laminates

Ali Gholizadeh et al.

Summary: The study explores the effect of toughening composite laminates with PCL nanofibers on matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, and fiber breakage failure mechanisms using the acoustic emission technique. The results indicate that applying PCL nanofibers increases the mode I critical strain energy release rate by about 38% and decreases different failure mechanisms by between 75 and 94%.

Tuning interlaminar fracture toughness of fine z-pin reinforced polymer composite

Min Li et al.

Summary: By implanting fine z-pins on the in-plane fibers, the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites can be significantly improved, while maintaining high retentions of in-plane mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the carbon fiber pins play a crucial role in enhancing the composite laminate.

Evaluation of wound healing efficiency of vancomycin-loaded electrospun chitosan/poly ethylene oxide nanofibers in full thickness wound model of rat

Fatemeh Kalalinia et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated hybrid chitosan/polyethylene oxide/vancomycin nanofibers and found that CH/PEO/VCM 2.5% exhibited better mechanical properties and smaller fiber diameter. All nanofibers showed no significant cytotoxicity to normal cells and effectively inhibited bacterial growth. The wound healing process was promoted by CH/PEO/VCM 2.5%, with faster healing observed compared to other treatment groups.

Interlaminar toughening in carbon fiber/epoxy composites interleaved with CNT-decorated polycaprolactone nanofibers

Xin Song et al.

Summary: In this study, flexible interleaves for CF/EP laminates were successfully created by uniformly decorating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers through ultrasonication. The enhanced interlaminar fracture energies and interlaminar shear strength of the laminates were achieved by introducing CNT-decorated PCL nanofibers, while maintaining the glass transition temperature as that of epoxy.

Damping and mechanical behaviour of composite laminates interleaved with rubbery nanofibers

Marco Povolo et al.

Summary: A structural composite with improved damping and unaffected mechanical properties was developed by interleaving electrospun NBR/PCL blend nanofibrous mats into epoxy unidirectional CFRP prepregs. The NBR/PCL mats improved composite damping by up to 77% without significantly affecting laminate mechanical properties, weight, and thickness. This study provides insights into enhancing damping capacity in composites for various applications like automotive and aerospace.

Summary: The study presents a detailed and critical investigation on the tensile testing of nanofibrous nonwovens, using electrospun Nylon 66 random nanofibrous mats as a case study. It is found that the diameter of nanofibers within a certain range affects the mechanical behavior of the mat, while specimen geometry does not impact the results.

Synergy between Phenoxy and CSR Tougheners on the Fracture Toughness of Highly Cross-Linked Epoxy-Based Composites

Pascal Van Velthem et al.

Summary: The addition of phenoxy thermoplastic and core-shell rubber toughening agents in equal weight to a CFRP high performance epoxy composite leads to a remarkable synergistic increase in fracture toughness by 130% and about 75% improvement in interlaminar shear strength, compared to using a single toughener. The study also shows that the synergy can be further optimized for potentially achieving the same level as unreinforced systems.

Rubbery-Modified CFRPs with Improved Mode I Fracture Toughness: Effect of Nanofibrous Mat Grammage and Positioning on Tanδ Behaviour

Emanuele Maccaferri et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the grammage and positioning of rubbery nanofibrous mats affect the damping behavior of CFRP, as evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests, and the number of nano-modified interleaves. Double cantilever beam (DCB) tests show that regardless of grammage, all tested reinforced laminates exhibit a significant improvement in G(I,R) (from +140% to +238%), while the effect on G(I,C) is more dependent on grammage (up to +140%).
