Exploring Breakthroughs in Three Traits Belonging to Seed Life

Angel J. Matilla

Summary: Significant progress has been made in the understanding of seed life based on prior knowledge and new methodologies. This update highlights recent advances in three key traits of seed life: preharvest sprouting, genomic imprinting, and stored mRNA. These breakthroughs have contributed to the development of improved varieties resistant to preharvest sprouting and shed light on the role of genomic imprinting and stored mRNA in seed development. However, there are still unanswered questions and further research is needed in these areas.

The Orthodox Dry Seeds Are Alive: A Clear Example of Desiccation Tolerance

Angel J. Matilla

Summary: To survive in dry conditions, orthodox seeds acquire desiccation tolerance. This involves the control of ABA, the presence of soluble sugars, and the role of ABI3. Understanding the mechanisms of seed survival after desiccation is crucial for studying plant evolution and seed viability.

Desiccation Tolerance as the Basis of Long-Term Seed Viability

Galina Smolikova et al.

Summary: Desiccation tolerance is a key adaptation feature of photoautotrophic organisms in terrestrial habitats. Vascular plants have developed complex anatomy structures and molecular mechanisms to maintain cell hydration, with different genes encoding mechanisms playing varying roles in different stages of plant evolution.Mechanisms behind desiccation tolerance include LEA proteins, sHSP, oligosaccharides, and antioxidants, activated during late seed maturation stage. Regulation is controlled by abscisic acid and protein DOG1, along with a network of transcription factors and epigenetic regulation.

Time to Wake Up: Epigenetic and Small-RNA-Mediated Regulation during Seed Germination

Eduardo Lujan-Soto et al.

Summary: Plants make decisions throughout their lifetime based on complex networks, including genome stability, environmental signal transduction, and transcriptional landscape. Epigenetic modifications and small non-coding RNAs are believed to play important roles in these processes, closely associated with seed traits and interactions with environmental factors.

Gene co-expression analysis of tomato seed maturation reveals tissue-specific regulatory networks and hubs associated with the acquisition of desiccation tolerance and seed vigour

Elise Bizouerne et al.

Summary: By analyzing the RNA sequences of different seed tissues, several gene modules associated with the physiological traits of seeds were identified. Dormancy is gradually released during fruit ripening, accompanied by an increase in seed vigor. Some gene modules involve gene expression regulation related to seed vigor.

A Novel Protein from Ectocarpus sp. Improves Salinity and High Temperature Stress Tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Pramod Rathor et al.

Summary: This study successfully expressed an unknown function gene, highly responsive to abiotic stresses in Ectocarpus sp., into Arabidopsis thaliana, leading to enhanced tolerance to salt and temperature stresses. The expression of key genes related to abiotic stress tolerance was significantly up-regulated in the transgenic line.

Plant Group II LEA Proteins: Intrinsically Disordered Structure for Multiple Functions in Response to Environmental Stresses

Mughair Abdul Aziz et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved defense mechanisms in response to environmental stresses, including overexpressing stress-responsive genes, among them genes encoding intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) like group II LEA proteins. These proteins play vital roles in protecting plant integrity by preventing crystallization of cellular components prior to various stresses, with studies on their distribution, structure, and genomic diversification providing insights into their role in plant stress tolerance mechanisms.

AtMYB32 regulates the ABA response by targeting ABI3, ABI4 and ABI5 and the drought response by targeting CBF4 in Arabidopsis

Xinmei Li et al.

Summary: The Arabidopsis thaliana transcription factor AtMYB32 is involved in regulating phenylpropanoid metabolism, response to abiotic stress, and positively regulates ABA-mediated seed germination and early seedling development. AtMYB32 directly promotes the expression of key positive regulators of ABA signaling, while likely repressing CBF4 expression in response to drought stress.

Medicago ABI3 Splicing Isoforms Regulate the Expression of Different Gene Clusters to Orchestrate Seed Maturation

David Lalanne et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of the ABI3 gene in seed maturation in Medicago, revealing three MtABI3 expression isoforms with distinct regulatory functions and gene clusters. Complementation experiments in Arabidopsis showed that all isoforms restored seed viability and desiccation tolerance, highlighting the importance of understanding the ABI3 network in seed development.

Transition from Seeds to Seedlings: Hormonal and Epigenetic Aspects

Galina Smolikova et al.

Summary: The transition from seed to seedling is a critical developmental step in plants, involving massive rearrangements of gene expression programs and signaling pathways. Hormonal balance and gene regulation play key roles in this process, with abscisic acid and gibberellins being major players.

FHY3 interacts with phytochrome B and regulates seed dormancy and germination

Shuangrong Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the red/far-red-absorbing photoreceptor phyB and the transcription factor FHY3 cooperatively regulate seed dormancy and germination in Arabidopsis thaliana. FHY3 affects seed growth and development by regulating multiple downstream genes. Additionally, light and phyB can promote the accumulation of FHY3 protein.
