Screening barley varieties tolerant to drought stress based on tolerant indices

Armin Saed-Moucheshi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated 25 barley varieties under normal and drought stress conditions to identify tolerant varieties and determine the influential yield components. The cluster analysis grouped genotypes into different clusters under both conditions, showing the limiting effect of drought on phenotypic variability. Certain traits, such as spike weight, leaf area, and grain number per spike, were found to have the most impact on grain yield under normal conditions, while other traits like number of fertile spikelets and grain number per spike were influential under water deficit conditions. Additionally, stress tolerance index (STI), harmonic mean productivity (HMP), and mean productivity (MP) were identified as proper indices for screening tolerant barley genotypes.

Transgenic cowpea plants expressing Bacillus thuringiensis Cry2Aa insecticidal protein imparts resistance to Maruca vitrata legume pod borer

Anil Kumar et al.

Summary: Novel transgenic cowpea lines expressing BtCry2Aa toxin with increased resistance to Maruca pod borer have been successfully developed for the first time, showing promising potential for enhancing cowpea production. The efficiency of transformation was 3.47% with 11 independent transgenic lines, and the bioefficacy of the expressed Cry2Aa protein was confirmed through feeding experiments, demonstrating significant reduction in damage and high mortality rate of Maruca pod borer. The inheritance of transgenes from T-0 to T-1 progeny plants was also verified, indicating the potential use of these transgenic plants in breeding programs for sustainable legume pod borer resistance.

Fab Advances in Fabaceae for Abiotic Stress Resilience: From 'Omics' to Artificial Intelligence

Dharmendra Singh et al.

Summary: Legumes are a superior source of proteins but their productivity and quality are greatly affected by diverse abiotic stresses due to limited understanding of genetic determinants. Molecular approaches, including 'omics' and novel techniques, are crucial for accelerating legume breeding programs for improved yield and quality. Integration of pan-omics with new omics approaches, along with the use of artificial intelligence algorithms, can help fast-track abiotic stress tolerance in pulses.

Current Perspectives on Introgression Breeding in Food Legumes

Aditya Pratap et al.

Summary: Breeding efforts in food legumes have been focused on exploiting genetic variation within the primary genepool, resulting in a narrow genetic base. Introgression from crop wild relatives, landraces, and exotic germplasm has been successful in widening the genetic base and discovering hidden variability. This method has led to the development of improved cultivars in various food legume crops, indicating the potential to capitalize on genetic variation for commercial development.

Biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani using volatile organic compounds of solanaceae seed-borne endophytic bacteria

Takwa Marzouk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of bacterial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in controlling R. solani infection on tomato seedlings and fruit as an alternative to chemical pesticides. Seed-born bacterial endophytes were isolated from cultivated and wild Solanum species, showing organ-specific colonization at early seedling stage and antifungal activity against R. solani. The study identified specific Bacillus strains producing VOCs with antifungal activity, indicating their potential for biocontrol of R. solani and fruit rot in tomatoes.

Summary: The study found positive and significant correlations between greenhouse and field evaluations for root rot disease in common bean, as well as high heritability of evaluated traits. Although no consistent significant marker trait associations were observed in GWAS analysis, genomic prediction accuracy was high for Pythium, plant vigor and related traits. Genomic predictions were also shown to be a promising method to estimate tolerance to Pythium, Fusarium and root rot related traits.

Biochemical Factors Associated with Resistance to Spotted Pod Borer, Maruca vitrata (Fabricius) in Green Gram

Sameer Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Legume pod borer, Maruca vitrata, is a serious pest to green gram causing damage mainly at the reproductive phase. The larvae cause damage by webbing leaves, buds, flowers, and pods together, making it difficult for natural enemies and chemicals to reach inside. This study investigated the role of biochemical constituents in immature green gram pods in relation to damage caused by the spotted pod borer, finding significant correlations between larval population, pod damage, protein, total sugar, and chlorophyll content, while phenol content showed a significant negative correlation.
