Discovering the ethnobotanical traditions of the island of Procida (Campania, southern Italy)

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the persistence of traditional plant uses knowledge on the island of Procida in southern Italy. Through interviews with 48 residents, it was found that the custom of using plants is still alive, especially for medicinal purposes such as treating skin and gastrointestinal diseases.

New data collected on Traditional Ethnobotanical Knowledge (TEK) of Italian alpine regions show a rich and alive traditional knowledge concerning plants uses in the Gran Paradiso National Park. The results provide opportunities for scientific research, development of health communities, and sustainable land management.

It was found that illiterate peasants have more knowledge and practice of traditional ethnomedicinal systems. Quantitative analysis revealed that plants from Moraceae and Asteraceae families were most commonly used in traditional ethnomedicinal practices.

Wild Plants Used as Herbs and Spices in Italy: An Ethnobotanical Review

An Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants in Mersin (Turkey)

The most important medicinal plants identified were Hypericum perforatum, Cedrus libani, Quercus coccifera, Arum dioscoridis, and Juniperus drupaceae. The study found that traditional folk medicine usage is still common in rural areas of Mersin.
