Summary: Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI) is widely cultivated in arid and semiarid areas, and the study investigated the effects of solvent concentrations on extraction yield, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activity of the skin and pulp extracts. The results showed that skin extracts had higher TPC, TFC, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activity compared to pulp extracts, with 80% acetone extracts generally performing the best. In particular, the 80% acetone yellow-orange skin extract exhibited the highest TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity.

Flavonoids: Potential Candidates for the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Disorders

Shweta Devi et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative disorders such as PD, AD, ALS, and HD are of great concern due to the lack of effective therapy and increasing number of cases. Small molecules like flavonoids have potential in reducing cellular stress and have gained attention for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties. Further research is needed to uncover the mechanisms behind the protective effects of flavonoids against cellular stress response in neurodegenerative disorders.

Baicalin protects LPS-induced blood-brain barrier damage and activates Nrf2-mediated antioxidant stress pathway

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Baicalin, a bioactive extract from Scutellaria Baicalensis Georgi, has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative functions, and its preventive protection can improve cell apoptosis and Fluorescein sodium infiltration in the brain tissue. Baicalin can also inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines production, up-regulate Claudin-5 and ZO-1 protein expression, reduce ROS and MDA production, promote SOD production, and activate Nrf2-mediated antioxidant stress pathway to protect blood-brain barrier damage.
