Assessing the effectiveness of public awareness-raising initiatives for the Hainan gibbon Nomascus hainanus

Junfei Qian et al.

Summary: Many protected areas conduct awareness-raising activities to increase local knowledge and support conservation programmes, but the effectiveness of such activities is rarely assessed. This study evaluated the outcome of previous conservation education around Bawangling National Nature Reserve in China, and found that gibbon-themed billboards and murals positively correlated with accurate knowledge about the critically endangered Hainan gibbon. However, overall levels of knowledge about gibbons and their conservation requirements remain low in many important areas, indicating a need for ongoing improvement of local awareness.
