Detection and segmentation of loess landslides via satellite images: a two-phase framework

Huajin Li et al.

Summary: Landslides are catastrophic natural hazards that can cause loss of life, property damage, and economic disruption. In this study, an image-based two-phase data-driven framework is proposed for detecting and segmenting landslide regions using satellite images. This framework outperforms other benchmarking algorithms in accurately segmenting landslides.

Revegetation of degraded ecosystems into grasslands using biosolids as an organic amendment: A meta-analysis

Laura W. Ploughe et al.

Summary: Research on the use of biosolids for soil reclamation has shown significant increases in productivity and cover, while not significantly affecting species richness, diversity, or exotic species abundance. Climatic variables, such as mean annual temperature, play a role in determining vegetative cover responses. Seeding can increase plant cover but decrease species richness during early stages of reclamation process.

Restoration effects of fertilization and grazing exclusion on different degraded alpine grasslands: Evidence from a 10-year experiment

Ning Zong et al.

Summary: Understanding the changes in vegetation parameters and soil nutrients in different stages of recovery is crucial for assessing and restoring degraded grasslands. Different degraded grasslands may respond differently to fertilization and grazing exclusion due to the change in species composition, while research in this aspect is still lacking. Nitrogen addition tended to reduce community cover and aboveground biomass in lightly degraded plots, but had no effect in plots with grazing exclusion or heavily degraded plots. Combining nitrogen and phosphorus additions greatly enhanced community cover and aboveground biomass, suggesting phosphorus addition can mitigate the negative effects of nitrogen addition.

Liquefaction within a bedding fault: Understanding the initiation and movement of the Daguangbao landslide triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake (Ms=8.0)

Shenghua Cui et al.

Summary: The Daguangbao landslide, triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, was a catastrophic mass movement with a volume of approximately 1.2 x 10(9) m(3). Laboratory tests revealed that the carbonate fault breccia on the sliding layer had a high liquefaction potential and low friction coefficient, which contributed to the initiation and movement of the landslide. Numerical calculations showed that the landslide occurred 36 seconds after the earthquake and collided with a riverbank in the 76th second, indicating that pore-water pressure during seismic shaking intensified the instability and mobility of the slope.

Seepage channel development in the crown pillar: Insights from induced microseismicity

Jingren Zhou et al.

Summary: The study proposed a method based on microseismicity to establish a seepage channel network and assess the damage state of rock mass in the pillar, which is critical for analyzing the stability of the crown pillar during the transition from open pit to underground mining.
