Mortality among medical radiation workers in the United States, 1965-2016

Mortality among US military participants at eight aboveground nuclear weapons test series

Summary: This study tracked the survival status of 114,270 nuclear weapons test participants for up to 65 years. The results showed that most atomic veterans were enlisted men who served in the Navy at the PPG and were born before 1930. The study found no statistically significant radiation associations with mortality among the participants.

Mortality from leukemia, cancer and heart disease among US nuclear power plant workers, 1957-2011

Summary: The Million Person Study of Low-Dose Health Effects aims to examine the radiation risk for chronic exposures received gradually over time among nuclear power plant workers. Prolonged exposure to radiation was found to increase the risk of leukemia other than CLL among NPP workers, but there was little evidence for a radiation association with all solid cancers, lung cancer, or ischemic heart disease. Increased precision is expected as different cohorts within the MPS are combined for analysis.

Mortality and cancer incidence 1952-2017 in United Kingdom participants in the United Kingdom's atmospheric nuclear weapon tests and experimental programmes

Summary: This study examined the mortality and cancer incidence among men who participated in the UK's atmospheric nuclear weapon tests. The results showed slightly higher mortality rates in the test participants compared to the control group, driven by increased risks for all cancers combined and non-cancer diseases. The incidence of leukemia, specifically chronic myeloid leukemia, was also found to be higher in the test participants. There was some evidence of higher mortality rates from cerebrovascular diseases in the test participants.

Summary: This study reports the incidence risks for cerebrovascular diseases and strokes in a cohort of Russian nuclear workers chronically exposed to ionizing radiation. The findings suggest a significant association between cumulative radiation dose and CeVD incidence, but no significant association with stroke or its types.

Summary: Exposure to ionizing radiation can harm the cerebrovascular system, but the effects of chronic low-dose radiation exposure, such as that experienced by the public and occupationally exposed individuals, are uncertain. This study used data from the UK National Registry for Radiation Workers to investigate the association between low-dose external radiation exposure and cerebrovascular disease mortality.

Mortality among workers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, 1943-2017

Summary: The study analyzed the mortality experience of 26,328 workers first employed at Los Alamos National Laboratory between 1943 and 1980, with majority being hired before 1960. Most workers had a college degree, and a significant percentage were female, white, and Hispanic. The study found little evidence of radiation increasing the risk of lung cancer or leukemia, but esophageal cancer was associated with radiation and plutonium intakes were linked to an increase in bone cancer. Non-radiation related health issues were also observed among Hispanic workers.

Mortality in Underground Miners in a Former Uranium Ore Mine Results of a Cohort Study Among Former Employees of Wismut AG in Saxony and Thuringia

Summary: Underground miners employed by Wismut AG exhibited significantly higher mortality rates due to silicosis/other pneumoconiosis and lung cancer. Different levels of exposure to radon and respirable crystalline silica led to increased mortality rates for different diseases, with this impact still evident more than 20 years after Wismut AG ceased its activities.

Cognitive effects of low dose of ionizing radiation - Lessons learned and research gaps from epidemiological and biological studies

Summary: Research has shown that low doses of ionizing radiation can affect cognitive function, but further understanding of the mechanisms is needed. It is important to describe the specific cognitive functions or diseases that may be affected by radiation exposure. Studying individual genetic susceptibility and gene expression may help identify individuals at higher risk of cognitive effects from radiation.
