Antimicrobial resistance in the globalized food chain: a One Health perspective applied to the poultry industry

Mauro de Mesquita Souza Saraiva et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health crisis, especially within the food animal industry where challenges to increase productivity while minimizing AMR continue to escalate. Poultry production plays a critical role in the global food supply, particularly as a source of low-cost, high-quality protein, impacting economies and public health worldwide. The globalization of the food supply, particularly within the poultry industry, is closely linked to the exchange of goods and services, as well as the movement of populations, presenting complex challenges in combating antimicrobial resistance at a global level.

Influence of lincomycin-spectinomycin treatment on the outcome of Enterococcus cecorum infection and on the cecal microbiota in broilers

Jana Schreier et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the effectiveness of early lincomycin-spectinomycin treatment during the first week of life in preventing EC-associated disease in broiler type chickens and its impact on the development of the cecal microbiota. Regardless of EC-infection, lincomycin-spectinomycin promoted the growth of Escherichia/Shigella and reduced the amount of Lactobacillus spp. in the ceca. Unexpectedly, the highest abundances of Enterococcus were found after antibiotic treatment, suggesting the growth of resistant enterococcal species. EC was not detected among the most abundant members of the genus Enterococcus. Oral EC-infection at the first day of life did not influence the development of cecal microbiota.

Development of a Phage Cocktail to Target Salmonella Strains Associated with Swine

Anisha M. Thanki et al.

Summary: In this study, six broad host range lytic Salmonella phages were extensively characterized. These phages showed differences in single nucleotide polymorphisms and phenotypic traits, particularly heat and pH sensitivity. In vitro killing assays demonstrated that three phage cocktails effectively reduced bacterial numbers within two hours. In larval challenge studies, prophylactic treatment with the SPFM10-SPFM14 cocktail was the most efficient, significantly improving larval survival and reducing Salmonella counts.

Prevalence and characterisation of antimicrobial resistance genes and class 1 and 2 integrons in multiresistant Escherichia coli isolated from poultry production

Przemyslaw Racewicz et al.

Summary: The global increase in drug-resistant bacteria has negative effects on animal production and human health. This study focused on evaluating the relationship between resistance determinants and phenotypic resistance in 74 commensal E. coli isolates from various ecological environments. The presence of genes encoding resistance to various antibiotics was detected in the studied bacterial isolates, indicating the common mediators of antimicrobial resistance. The presence of class 1 and 2 integrons was also confirmed in a significant percentage of the multidrug resistant E. coli isolates.

Recurring outbreaks by the same Escherichia coli ST10 clone in a broiler unit during 18 months

Anders Miki Bojesen et al.

Summary: The investigation focused on determining the cause of repeated disease outbreaks in a broiler production unit over a period of 18 months. The responsible agent was identified as Escherichia coli, with mortality rates reaching up to 22%. Analysis revealed that all chicken isolates had the same band patterns, indicating that the same clone of E. coli was responsible for all seven outbreaks. Despite following strict production principles and thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures, the outbreaks occurred consistently.

Prevalence and Antibiotic Resistance Characteristics of Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli among Healthy Chickens from Farms and Live Poultry Markets in China

Ming Zou et al.

Summary: Chicken meat and chickens with colibacillosis are suspected sources of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) causing diseases in humans. This study identified 22 ExPEC isolates from healthy chickens in China, with some isolates carrying multidrug resistance genes, including resistance to carbapenems and colistin. The presence of ExPEC in healthy chickens, especially those carrying mcr-1 and/or bla(NDM), poses a threat to consumer health.

Antimicrobial Resistance of Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis Commensal Isolates from Laying Hen Farms in Spain

Jorge Rivera-Gomis et al.

Summary: The study evaluated antimicrobial susceptibility of commensal bacteria in Spanish laying hens, finding varying levels of resistance, with some strains showing resistance to key drugs used in human medicine. This highlights the potential public health risk posed by laying hens as a source of antimicrobial resistance for humans.

Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC): An Overview of Virulence and Pathogenesis Factors, Zoonotic Potential, and Control Strategies

Dipak Kathayat et al.

Summary: APEC is a pathogen that causes colibacillosis in avian species, potentially posing a foodborne zoonotic risk. In addition to known virulence factors, other factors contribute to APEC pathogenesis. APEC shows resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, highlighting the need for effective vaccines and alternative therapies.

Poultry Litter Contamination by Escherichia coli Resistant to Critically Important Antimicrobials for Human and Animal Use and Risk for Public Health in Cameroon

Frederic Moffo et al.

Summary: The study reveals a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from poultry litter in Cameroon, indicating a significant public health risk. Factors such as lack of training and experience in poultry farming, as well as high frequency of digestive tract diseases, are associated with a greater likelihood of multidrug resistance in E. coli. The findings highlight poultry litter as a potential source of resistant bacteria transmission to the environment and humans.

Occurrence of Colibacillosis in Broilers and Its Relationship With Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) Population Structure and Molecular Characteristics

Ilias Apostolakos et al.

Summary: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) causes significant economic losses in the broiler industry. This study revealed high mortality rates and varying incidence of colibacillosis in different stages of broiler production, potentially linked to changes in APEC genotypes. Despite genetic diversity, there was overlap in genotypes across production stages and evidence of clonal transmission events. Additionally, some cephalosporin-resistant APEC strains may originate from cephalosporin-resistant avian fecal E. coli (AFEC).

Genomic evolution of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli

Pimlapas Leekitcharoenphon et al.

Summary: The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is considered one of the biggest health threats globally due to the use of antimicrobial drugs in humans and livestock. The commensal microbiota, particularly the intestinal microbiota, plays a vital role in the development of AMR, while mobile genetic elements (MGEs) are central in facilitating the acquisition and spread of AMR genes. The study found that Escherichia coli isolates from different countries, animal hosts, and farms did not show significant clonality or clustering based on genetic markers, AMR, and MGEs.
