Residual β-lactam antibiotics and ecotoxicity to Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna of pharmaceutical wastewater in the treatment process

Yaru Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that the biological treatment units in the pharmaceutical wastewater treatment process significantly reduced antibiotics and ecotoxicity, which were strongly correlated with residual antibiotics, amoxicillin, cephalexin, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus in the water. The detected levels of antibiotics were low, but in combination with organic toxic substances, they posed joint ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms.

Acute and Chronic Effects of Fin Amputation on Behavior Performance of Adult Zebrafish in 3D Locomotion Test Assessed with Fractal Dimension and Entropy Analyses and Their Relationship to Fin Regeneration

Gilbert Audira et al.

Summary: This study found that amputation in the caudal fin resulted in the most pronounced behavior alterations in zebrafish and that these changes were caused by pain elicited from the fin amputation. Treatment with lidocaine could alleviate the behavioral effects but did not accelerate the recovery process.

Zebrafish as a Screening Model to Study the Single and Joint Effects of Antibiotics

Roxana Jijie et al.

Summary: The excessive use of antibiotics and the limit of wastewater treatment facilities have resulted in drug residue accumulation in the natural environment, raising concerns over potential harmful effects on ecosystems and human health. Zebrafish has emerged as a promising animal model for studying the toxic effects of drugs and their therapeutic efficacy due to limitations of traditional vertebrate model systems. Despite significant literature on the impact of single antibiotic exposure, there is little information on the effects of antibiotic mixtures using zebrafish as an animal model.

Summary: This study elucidated the molecular mechanisms of Tylosin toxicity in Raphidocelis subcapitata, revealing impacts on pathways related to photosynthesis, DNA replication, and energy metabolism. Photosynthesis was identified as the most sensitive target of Tylosin toxicity in the algae species.

Antibiotic drugs alter zebrafish behavior

Barbara Dutra Petersen et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are widely used in human and veterinary health along with the food industry, resulting in their presence as contaminants in water bodies. This study reveals that exposure to certain antibiotics led to hyperlocomotion, cognitive decline, and exacerbated aggressive behavior in adult zebrafish, indicating a short-term impact on their behavior.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Summary: This study estimates global antibiotic consumption using multiple data sources and statistical models, highlighting large variations in antibiotic usage in low- and middle-income countries. The findings show a 46% increase in global antibiotic consumption from 2000 to 2018, with significant regional disparities.
