Urolithins: a Comprehensive Update on their Metabolism, Bioactivity, and Associated Gut Microbiota

Rocio Garcia-Villalba et al.

Summary: Urolithins, metabolites produced by the gut microbiota from polyphenols, have been extensively studied for their potential health benefits. Recent research has identified 13 urolithins and their corresponding conjugated metabolites in various human fluids and tissues. The study highlights the importance of understanding the microorganisms involved in urolithin production and the composition of gut microbiota associated with urolithin metabolism. However, further in vitro studies are needed to confirm the reported activities of urolithins.

Identification of polyphenols from Rosa roxburghii Tratt pomace and evaluation of in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activity

Dansi Huang et al.

Summary: Rosa roxburghii Tratt pomace (RRTP) was extracted to obtain free and bound phenolic fractions, which showed dose-dependent scavenging of radicals and improved survival rates in paraquat-exposed nematodes by enhancing SOD and CAT activities. These results suggest RRTP as a good and cost-effective source of natural antioxidants.

Effects of acylated and nonacylated anthocyanins extracts on gut metabolites and microbiota in diabetic Zucker rats: A metabolomic and metagenomic study

Kang Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nonacylated and acylated anthocyanins on gut metabolites and microbiota in diabetic rats. The results showed that both anthocyanin extracts increased cecal sugar levels and the abundance of certain bacterial species, while decreasing the abundance of others. Acylated anthocyanins had more regulatory effects and were more beneficial in diabetes.

Metagenomic Analysis of the Gut Microbiome Reveals Enrichment of Menaquinones (Vitamin K2) Pathway in Diabetes Mellitus

Nihar Ranjan Dash et al.

Summary: The study found that Gut microbiome of T2DM patients are enriched in metabolic pathways associated with vitamin K2 biosynthesis, which may be related to insulin resistance. T2DM patients with high glycosylated hemoglobin levels have different gene abundances in metabolic pathways, which could be significant for the development of new biomarkers and better management strategies for T2DM in the future.

The Gut Microbiota Profile According to Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes Patients Treated with Personal Insulin Pumps

Sandra Mrozinska et al.

Summary: Several studies have explored the associations between type 1 diabetes and microbiota, with this study focusing on the colonic microbiota structure in T1DM patients treated with insulin pumps. The study found that there were differences in microbial composition and metabolic pathways between patients with good and poor metabolic control, indicating the potential impact of insulin therapy on colonic flora. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of these findings.

Steroid Metabolism in Children and Adolescents With Obesity and Insulin Resistance: Altered SRD5A and 20α/20βHSD Activity

Marta Suminska et al.

Summary: Alterations in glucocorticoid metabolism may contribute to the development of obesity and insulin resistance, affecting androgen balance. This study evaluated steroid metabolism in obese children and found a positive relationship between 5 alpha-reductase activity and IR. Changes in 20 alpha HSD and 20 beta HSD activity were significant in obese girls with IR.

1H NMR Metabolomics and Full-Length RNA-Seq Reveal Effects of Acylated and Nonacylated Anthocyanins on Hepatic Metabolites and Gene Expression in Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats

Kang Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of nonacylated and acylated anthocyanins on hepatic gene expression and metabolic profiles in diabetic rats. Both types of anthocyanin extracts restored the levels of multiple metabolites and expression of genes involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, but with some differences in specific gene and metabolite regulations.

Superfruits in China: Bioactive phytochemicals and their potential health benefits - A Review

Jinfang Liu et al.

Summary: The term superfruit refers to antioxidant-rich fruits, beneficial for human health. While some superfruits in China like Cili, Goji berry, and sea buckthorn have strong antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory activity, they have not received much attention. More research is needed to validate their health benefits and potential for functional food development.

Botanical characteristics, phytochemistry and related biological activities of Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit, and its potential use in functional foods: a review

Li-Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Due to the impact of growing global population, reduction in arable land, and effects of climate change, the incongruity between food supply and demand has become a pressing issue. The development of modern agricultural techniques has led to underutilised functional foods being recognized as an important strategy for solving food security problems. Rosa roxburghii Tratt (RRT) is a natural fruit with high antioxidant potential, making it a promising candidate for functional food development to meet the demand for health-promoting properties in food products.
