Forensic carbon accounting: Assessing the role of seaweeds for carbon sequestration

Catriona L. Hurd et al.

Summary: Carbon sequestration is the secure storage of carbon-containing molecules for more than 100 years. Trees on land sequester carbon in woody biomass, and it has been suggested that seaweeds can play a similar role in ocean carbon sequestration. However, verifying if CO2 fixed by seaweeds leads to carbon sequestration is complex due to factors such as seaweed biomass turnover and the exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and ocean. A Forensic Carbon Accounting approach is proposed to analyze carbon flows and assess the magnitude of CO2 removal and carbon sequestration by seaweeds.

Variation in Population Structure and Standing Stocks of Kelp Along Multiple Environmental Gradients and Implications for Ecosystem Services

Hege Gundersen et al.

Summary: The study focuses on ecosystem services provided by macroalgae in the Norwegian part of the NE Atlantic, with characteristics of canopy kelp plants varying along different gradients. The largest kelps, highest biomass, and highest biomass of epiphytic algae were found in Mid-Norway. Most size-related kelp characteristics decreased with water depth but increased with wave exposure. The developed statistical models can calculate site-specific values and be used to map kelp derived ecosystem services.
