Modelling submerged biofouled microplastics and their vertical trajectories

Reint Fischer et al.

Summary: The fate of (micro)plastic particles in the open ocean is determined by biological and physical processes. The attachment, growth, and loss of algae on the particles, as well as wind-induced mixing and the sinking velocity of the particles, affect the vertical distribution of the particles.

Dispersion of Surface Drifters in the Tropical Atlantic

Erik van Sebille et al.

Summary: An analysis of two types of surface drifters deployed in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean revealed that undrogued drifters separate more slowly than drogued drifters, and are more likely to enter the Caribbean Sea. The study also found that a novel ocean currents product did not clearly simulate the drifters, highlighting the need for further improvements in hydrodynamic models for Sargassum drift forecasting in the region.

Global simulations of marine plastic transport show plastic trapping in coastal zones

Victor Onink et al.

Summary: Research indicates that within the first 5 years of entering the ocean, at least 77% of positively buoyant marine plastic debris (PBMPD) released from land-based sources is either beached or floating in coastal waters. The highest concentrations of beached PBMPD are found in Southeast Asia due to high plastic inputs from land and limited offshore transport, although the absolute concentrations are generally overestimates compared to field measurements. Additionally, the origin of beached plastic debris varies, with some exclusive economic zones having plastic originating almost entirely from within the zone while in other EEZs, particularly remote islands, the vast majority of beached plastic debris arrives from remote sources.

The mysterious ecosystem at the ocean's surface

Rebecca R. Helm

Summary: Life on the ocean's surface serves as a connection between different worlds for numerous terrestrial and marine species. Despite the unique neustonic communities found there, the surface ecosystem faces challenges from climate change and pollution.

More than 1000 rivers account for 80% of global riverine plastic emissions into the ocean

Lourens J. J. Meijer et al.

Summary: Research shows that plastic waste in the marine environment mainly comes from rivers, with a model approach predicting the probability of plastic waste entering the ocean and identifying regions likely to emit plastic into the ocean. It is estimated that over 1000 rivers globally contribute to 80% of plastic waste emissions, with small urban rivers being the most polluting.

Transport, weathering and pollution of plastic from container losses at sea: Observations from a spillage of inkjet cartridges in the North Atlantic Ocean

Andrew Turner et al.

Summary: The study investigated beached polypropylene inkjet cartridges spilled from a lost ship container in the North Atlantic Ocean. Observations showed the distribution patterns of the cartridges along major ocean currents, with significant weathering and potential chemical contamination. The presence of electronic waste in some cartridges highlights challenges in dealing with plastic waste in the ocean.
