Perspectives on managing fisheries for community wellbeing in the face of climate change

Laura K. Nelson et al.

Summary: Climate change affects coastal communities, impacting their livelihoods, food security, and wellbeing. Human wellbeing is influenced by the environment and is increasingly considered in environmental management. Decision-makers' values and perspectives can affect the aspects of wellbeing included in planning. Using Q methodology, this study examines how individuals in fisheries management prioritize components of wellbeing for coastal communities in the California Current social-ecological system. The study reveals three discourses on supporting or improving wellbeing in these communities and discusses their implications for decision-making in climate adaptation in fisheries.

Ecolabeled seafood and sustainable consumption in the Canadian context: issues and insights from a survey of seafood consumers

Anthony Winson et al.

Summary: The concept of sustainable consumption is debated and associated with ecological citizenship. A study on Canadian consumer awareness of sustainable seafood found that while consumers had high awareness of marine environment importance, they had limited understanding of seafood sustainability and ecolabels. Socio-demographic factors significantly influenced attitudes, understanding, and purchasing behaviors of sustainable seafood. Lack of ecolabel understanding, product sustainability information, and in-store guidance were identified as key barriers to purchasing ecolabeled seafood products.
