Different treatment methodologies and reactors employed for dairy effluent treatment-A review

Rahul B. Krishna et al.

Summary: Dairy plants are considered wet industries as they require a significant amount of water for their production processes. India is one of the top milk producers in the world, and most of the effluent generated in the dairy sector comes from clean-up procedures. Classic biological methods are commonly used for dairy effluent treatment systems to remove organic compounds and nitrogen at a relatively low cost. However, challenges such as high fat content, organic load, and sludge generation still exist. Dairy effluent treatment and waste management have gained attention recently, and the role of Geographic Information Systems in dairy waste management has been examined.

Treatment of a dairy effluent by classical electrocoagulation and indirect electrocoagulation with aluminum electrodes

Serge Raoul Tchamango et al.

Summary: By applying classical electrocoagulation and indirect electrocoagulation to an artificial dairy effluent, the study found that optimum removals were achieved at pH 7 with calcium chloride as the supporting electrolyte. The treated effluent can be reused within 45 hours, and the results showed similar turbidity and phosphates removal between electrocoagulation with open circuit and classical electrocoagulation, with the latter showing weaker removal of organic matter.

Performance and Microbial Community Analysis in an Anaerobic Hybrid Baffled Reactor Treating Dairy Wastewater

Alessandra Giordani et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of increasing organic loading rate on the microbial community and performance of the HABR during simulated dairy wastewater treatment. The system could maintain high COD removal efficiency and increase methane production, with most of the organic matter removal occurring in compartments C1 and C2. The dominant species in the HABR were acetoclastic methanogen Methanosaeta and hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanobacterium, while species capable of syntrophic partnership with methanogens were also identified.
