HMDB 5.0: the Human Metabolome Database for 2022

David S. Wishart et al.

Summary: The Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) has been providing comprehensive information about human metabolites since 2007, and has undergone significant improvements and upgrades in its latest update, HMDB 5.0. These improvements include an increase in the number of metabolite entries, enhancements to metabolite descriptions, new visualization tools, and more accurately predicted spectral data sets. These upgrades are aimed at improving the usability and potential applications of the HMDB in various fields, including human metabolomics, exposomics, lipidomics, nutritional science, biochemistry, and clinical chemistry.

Volatile compounds in human breath: critical review and meta-analysis

Theo Issitt et al.

Summary: Volatile compounds in human breath can reflect the inner workings of the body, but the identification of breath biomarkers remains inconsistent and conflicting. This study grouped volatile organic compounds into chemical functional groups to improve biomarker discovery. The results show that using targeted functional volatile biomarkers, rather than individual compounds, can improve accuracy and success in diagnostic research and application.

Breath isoprene excretion during rest and low-intensity cycling exercise is associated with skeletal muscle mass in healthy human subjects

Amane Hori et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle mass is a significant determinant of exhaled isoprene both at rest and during exercise, regardless of age. This suggests that skeletal muscle may have an important role in producing or storing endogenous isoprene.

The Volatilomic Footprints of Human HGC-27 and CLS-145 Gastric Cancer Cell Lines

Andreas Leiherer et al.

Summary: Several studies have reported the presence of certain volatile biomarkers in the breath of patients with gastric cancer, and investigations into gastric cancer cells can help reveal the biochemical pathways underlying these compounds. The use of gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection can map the volatile footprints of gastric cancer cells and normal gastric epithelial cells, allowing for differentiation between cancerous and healthy cells. This study found altered metabolism in gastric cancer cells compared to normal cells, with unique volatile markers identified in cancer cells.

A literature survey of all volatiles from healthy human breath and bodily fluids: the human volatilome

Natalia Drabinska et al.

Summary: This paper presents an updated version of the 2014 review on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in healthy humans. Over 900 additional VOCs have been reported since 2014, with the inclusion of VOCs from semen. The numbers of VOCs vary across bodily fluids, with some clear differences observed after classification of compounds.
