Curcumin and colorectal cancer: An update and current perspective on this natural medicine

Wenhao Weng et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy and its incidence is increasing worldwide. Various factors within the tumor microenvironment, such as gut microbial imbalance, impaired intestinal barrier function, and chronic inflammation, play a significant role in its pathogenesis. Curcumin, a natural medicine derived from Curcuma longa, has shown multiple anti-cancer activities and has potential as a cancer preventative and adjunct therapy for colorectal cancer.

Targeted delivery of curcumin in breast cancer cells via hyaluronic acid modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle to enhance anticancer efficiency

Shatadal Ghosh et al.

Summary: Curcumin, a natural antioxidant, was delivered through Mesoporous silica nanoparticles to enhance its anticancer efficacy by targeting cancer cells with hyaluronic acid. The synthesized nanohybrid showed cell death in MDA-MB-231 cells and decreased tumor volume in tumor-bearing mice by inducing ROS, cell cycle arrest, and modulation of apoptotic pathways. Overall, the study found that the nanohybrid had increased anticancer efficacy compared to free curcumin.

The role of curcumin in aging and senescence: Molecular mechanisms

Aliabbas Zia et al.

Summary: Healthy aging and human longevity are complex phenotypes affected by both environmental and genetic factors, with diet and caloric restriction playing crucial roles. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from Curcuma longa, has anti-aging properties and has been shown to extend the lifespan of aging model organisms. Its biological activities include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, chemopreventive, and anti-neurodegenerative characteristics, with mechanisms involving modulation of major signaling pathways influencing longevity, such as IIS, mTOR, PKA, and FOXO signaling pathways.
