The distribution of Dermacentorreticulatus in the Czech Republic re-assessed: citizen science approach to understanding the current distribution of the Babesiacanis vector

Summary: The distribution range of the ornate dog tick Dermacentor reticulatus is expanding rapidly in the Czech Republic. This tick species is a vector for canine babesiosis, as well as the transmission of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in equids. The study found that D. reticulatus was present in all regions of the country, and DNA of B. canis was detected in a number of ticks, indicating the establishment of B. canis in the Czech Republic. These results highlight the importance for veterinarians to consider the possibility of canine babesiosis even in dogs without a travel history.
