Terrorism and Tourism: An Empirical Exemplification of Consequences of Terrorist Attacks on Tourism Revenues in Turkey

Mustafa Goktug Kaya et al.

Summary: The booming tourism sector in Turkey has brought major economic gains, but terrorism poses a challenge. The study finds that terrorism does not have significant effects on tourism revenues, but casualties from terror attacks do have a significant impact, with a 1% increase in reported injuries leading to approximately 0.1% decrease in revenues.

Retrospecting on resource abundance in leading oil-producing African countries: how valid is the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in a sectoral composition framework?

Stephen Taiwo Onifade

Summary: Policymakers and authorities in Africa are concerned about economic growth and stability but need to address increasing environmental degradation challenges. This study examines the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis and the factors contributing to CO2 emissions in oil-producing African economies. The findings suggest that fossil energy consumption, income levels, and the shares of the manufacturing sector significantly increase environmental pollution. The study recommends diversification of energy portfolios and economic diversification to promote environmental sustainability.

Environmental aspect of energy transition and urbanization in the OPEC member states

Stephen Taiwo Onifade et al.

Summary: The study finds that fossil fuel utilization has a significant positive impact on environmental degradation in the selected OPEC countries, while the negative impact of renewable energy utilization and urbanization on carbon dioxide emissions is insignificant in both the short and long run. The current energy transition policy of OPEC states is not sufficient for environmental sustainability, and the Environmental Kuznets Curve is not valid in the panel of OPEC countries. The research also shows a uni-directional causality from income level to renewable energy consumption, and urbanization strongly Granger causes fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions among the countries.

The effects of environmental innovations on CO2 emissions: Empirical evidence from Europe

Michelle Mongo et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of environmental innovations, consumption of renewable energies, GDP per capita, and economic openness on CO2 emissions in 15 European countries over 23 years using an ARDL model. The results suggest that environmental innovations can lower CO2 emissions in the long-term, but may have a rebound effect in the short-term. The study recommends the introduction of new policies combining tools from environmental economics and ecological economy to encourage individuals to consume differently and favor products/services with less negative impact on the environment.

Renewables as a pathway to environmental sustainability targets in the era of trade liberalization: empirical evidence from Turkey and the Caspian countries

Stephen Taiwo Onifade et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between low-carbon emission and improved environmental quality in Turkey and the Caspian countries, using the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The findings show that an increase in renewable energy consumption significantly reduces carbon emissions, while an increase in trade openness significantly impacts environmental quality.

Andrew Adewale Alola et al.

Summary: The study revealed the detrimental impact of coal and oil energy utilization on the environment, with coal showing a more severe impact. Additionally, achieving sustainable development through income growth is not feasible in Turkey, suggesting the need for alternative economic policies to address the issue.
