Entropy generation of turbulent Cu-water nanofluid flows inside thermal systems equipped with transverse-cut twisted turbulators

M. E. Nakhchi et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical simulations were conducted on the thermal characteristics and second-law analysis of turbulent Cu-H2O nanofluid flow in heat exchangers with transverse-cut twisted tapes (TCTTs) fitted by alternate axis. The simulations showed that TCTTs with a transverse-cut ratio of 0.7 generated higher turbulent kinetic energy compared to those with a ratio of 0.9, with an increase in nanofluid volume concentration leading to a reduction in thermal entropy generation.

Thermohydraulic performance and effectiveness of a mini shell and tube heat exchanger working with a nanofluid regarding effects of fins and nanoparticle shape

Mehdi Bahiraei et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of varied nanoparticle shapes, Reynolds numbers, and inlet temperatures on the thermal-hydraulic efficacy of a boehmite nanofluid in a mini shell and tube heat exchanger. Results show that increasing Reynolds number leads to higher heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and effectiveness, while the performance index decreases.

A comprehensive analysis for second law attributes of spiral heat exchanger operating with nanofluid using two-phase mixture model: Exergy destruction minimization attitude

Mehdi Bahiraei et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the second law attributes of a counter-flow spiral heat exchanger with an Al2O3-H2O nanofluid, showing that dispersing more nanoparticles can reduce total entropy generation while increasing thermal entropy generation. Overall exergy destruction in the heat exchanger decreases significantly with increasing volume fraction, but tends to increase with flow rate increment. The second law efficiency of the heat exchanger is consistently high, with a minimum value greater than 0.84 and increasing with higher volume fraction or flow rate.

A numerical study on the effects of nanoparticles and stair fins on performance improvement of phase change thermal energy storages

M. E. Nakhchi et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of CuO nanoparticles and stair fins on improving the efficiency of latent heat thermal energy storage units. The results show that by adding nanoparticles and using descending stair fins, the energy storage capacity can be greatly enhanced compared to pure PCM. Additionally, the downward fins with larger stair ratios perform significantly better due to free convection effects and recirculation flows.
