Conservation agriculture based integrated crop management sustains productivity and economic profitability along with soil properties of the maize-wheat rotation

Vijay Pooniya et al.

Summary: Field experiments were conducted for 5 years to evaluate the performance of eight different integrated crop management modules in a maize-wheat rotation system. The results showed that the modules based on conservation agriculture and residue retention had higher crop yields, water productivity, and sustainable yield index compared to conventional modules. These modules also had positive impacts on soil properties.

Carbon footprint and net carbon gain of major long-term cropping systems under no-tillage

S. Bansal et al.

Summary: Due to increased contribution from the agriculture sector, it is important to study the ability of no-tilled diverse cropping systems to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. A long-term experiment at the University of Tennessee found that poultry litter application can reduce C-footprint and enhance sustainability compared to other bio-covers. Hairy vetch also showed promising results in reducing C-footprint in continuous corn/soybean/cotton systems.

Ecosystem Services Valuation for the Sustainable Land Use Management by Nature-Based Solution (NbS) in the Common Agricultural Policy Actions: A Case Study on the Foglia River Basin (Marche Region, Italy)

Elisa Morri et al.

Summary: Agricultural land provides important ecosystem services to human wellbeing, and understanding the contribution of agricultural practices to these services can inform land use management. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can address societal challenges while providing human wellbeing and biodiversity benefits. Farmers' actions in rural development programs can be considered as NbS and may affect ecosystem services related to water regulation and supply, N adsorption, and erosion protection. This study evaluates these services and highlights the importance of compensating farmers for producing public goods.

Crop productivity, soil health, and energy dynamics of Indian Himalayan intensified organic maize-based systems

Raghavendra Singh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated six cropping systems and three soil moisture conservation measures over a four-year period, showing that combining cowpea with maize and including winter crops can significantly improve yield and soil quality in rainfed ecosystems. Among the systems, maize thorn cowpea-garden pea (M thorn C-GP) recorded the highest crop productivity.
