Influence of porosity and permeability of flow distributor on thermal stratification in single media storage tank

Varun Joshi et al.

Summary: In a single media single tank system, a wall permeability between 10^(-9) m(2) and 10^(-8) m(2) leads to optimal thermal stratification. Additionally, the minimum thermocline thickness achieved is about 13% of the entire tank height, significantly lower than reported values.

Improvement of the thermal performance of a solar triple concentric-tube thermal energy storage unit using cascaded phase change materials

Radouane Elbahjaoui

Summary: This study numerically investigated the thermal performance of a solar domestic hot water system incorporating triple concentric-tube latent heat storage modules filled with cascaded phase change materials. The model based on the enthalpy method was verified and validated by comparing predictions with previously published experimental and numerical results. The thermal performance of the cascaded thermal energy storage tank was evaluated under specific weather conditions and compared with that of a single-PCM storage tank during the charging process.

Numerical evaluation of the latent heat thermal energy storage performance enhancement by installing longitudinal fins

Mateo Kirincic et al.

Summary: The research numerically investigates the effect of installation of longitudinal fins on the performance enhancement of shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage, comparing it with plain tube configuration. Results show that fins significantly improve the overall heat transfer, and the reduction in phase change material mass and obstruction of natural convection in the liquid phase have negligible effect on the overall latent storage thermal performance during both charging and discharging.

Improved thermocline initialization through optimized inlet design for single-tank thermal energy storage systems

Julius Weiss et al.

Summary: Single tank thermal energy storage systems based on the thermocline concept have been extensively researched as a cost-effective alternative to molten salt double tank storage systems. However, the discrepancy between theoretical models and actual flow distribution has been identified as a reason for the inability to achieve high cyclic efficiencies predicted in simulations. The optimal placement and geometric characteristics of fluid distributors in the tank play a crucial role in minimizing the initial thermocline thickness and optimizing thermal stratification.

Summary: The study found that integrating micro encapsulated PCM in radiant heating floors significantly increases thermal storage capacity, and ventilation can enhance heat release flexibility. Experimental results showed that a mass ratio of 8.7% PCM in mortar blocks increased heating time by 78.5% and thermal storage capacity by 80.3% compared to pure mortar blocks.
