Performance evaluation of novel tapered shell and tube cascaded latent heat thermal energy storage

B. V. Rudra Murthy et al.

Summary: The geometric design of the storage system is crucial for enhancing heat transfer rate in latent heat thermal energy storage technology. The study compares the heat transfer performance of tapered and cylindrical cascaded latent heat storage models, showing that the tapered unit has superior performance with higher average power but slightly lower discharge power compared to the cylindrical unit.

Improvement of the thermal performance of a solar triple concentric-tube thermal energy storage unit using cascaded phase change materials

Radouane Elbahjaoui

Summary: This study numerically investigated the thermal performance of a solar domestic hot water system incorporating triple concentric-tube latent heat storage modules filled with cascaded phase change materials. The model based on the enthalpy method was verified and validated by comparing predictions with previously published experimental and numerical results. The thermal performance of the cascaded thermal energy storage tank was evaluated under specific weather conditions and compared with that of a single-PCM storage tank during the charging process.

Numerical evaluation of the latent heat thermal energy storage performance enhancement by installing longitudinal fins

Mateo Kirincic et al.

Summary: The research numerically investigates the effect of installation of longitudinal fins on the performance enhancement of shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage, comparing it with plain tube configuration. Results show that fins significantly improve the overall heat transfer, and the reduction in phase change material mass and obstruction of natural convection in the liquid phase have negligible effect on the overall latent storage thermal performance during both charging and discharging.

Phase change material heat transfer enhancement in latent heat thermal energy storage unit with single fin: Comprehensive effect of position and length

Junting Wu et al.

Summary: This study explored the comprehensive effect of the position and length of a single fin in a latent heat thermal energy storage unit on the melting and solidification of phase-change materials through transient numerical simulations. It was found that increasing the fin length and lowering the fin position simultaneously significantly reduced the total melting time, but resulted in non-uniform temperature distribution during the solidification process. An optimal fin position corresponding to different fin lengths was suggested. Additionally, the disparity between heat storage/release and phase transition was quantitatively discussed.

Experimental and numerical study on the effect of multiple phase change materials thermal energy storage system

Idris Al Siyabi et al.

Summary: Thermal energy storage using Phase Change Materials (PCMs) is currently of great interest, and the use of multiple PCM technique has been shown to enhance thermal performance in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Both experimental and numerical studies demonstrate that the multiple PCM arrangement results in a higher average temperature of PCM compared to other arrangements.

Heat transfer enhancement in latent heat thermal energy storage using copper foams with varying porosity

Jie Lei et al.

Summary: The study shows that incorporating copper foams into PCM significantly enhances the heat transfer performance of LHTES, reducing the full melting time by 73.7% and increasing the average heat flux density from 96.38W to 330.16W. Dividing the copper foam into upper and lower parts and increasing porosity separately along the positive x and y directions is the optimal method, leading to reductions in full melting time and increases in average heat flux density.

Experimental analysis of a latent thermal energy storage system enhanced with metal foam

Joan Tarragona et al.

Summary: The energy consumption of refrigeration systems worldwide has increased by 50% in the last 20 years. Active refrigeration systems are commonly used in industry to maintain cold chains, but they have drawbacks such as susceptibility to power outages and vibrations. Passive cold chain transport using latent thermal energy storage systems is proposed as a potential solution to overcome these issues.
