The Role of the Gut Microbiota in the Pathogenesis of Diabetes

Weronika Bielka et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the role of gut microbiota in healthy individuals and the changes in bacterial composition associated with the development of diabetes. It also presents new developments in diabetes therapy based on influencing the gut microbiota as a promising method to alter the course of the disease. Furthermore, it highlights the lack of data and suggests future directions for research to establish the causal relationship between dysbiosis and diabetes.

Liraglutide and sitagliptin have no effect on intestinal microbiota composition: A 12-week randomized placebo-controlled trial in adults with type 2 diabetes

Mark M. Smits et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists and DPP-4 inhibitors on the intestinal microbiota in adults with type 2 diabetes. Results showed that these agents did not affect the diversity of the intestinal microbiota, nor were changes in microbial composition related to clinical parameters.

Summary: The study revealed an independent association between VCAM-1 and VEGF with cardiovascular risk in patients with Type 2 diabetes, suggesting these biomarkers can serve as indicators for evaluating cardiovascular risk.

Vascular damage effect of circulating microparticles in patients with ACS is aggravated by type 2 diabetes

Xu-Lan Wang et al.

Summary: The study compared the content and function of circulating microparticles (MPs) from patients with ACS with or without T2DM, revealing that T2DM not only increased MP content but also exacerbated vascular impairment effects in ACS patients. These findings may offer novel insights for the treatment of patients with ACS and T2DM.

Gut Bacterial Characteristics of Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and the Application Potential

Yanyan Que et al.

Summary: Research shows significant differences in microbial diversity between individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and controls, but not in microbial alpha diversity. Various operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and bacterial genera with significant odds ratios for T2DM were identified. The microbial characteristics of T2DM can be applied to other studies, improving detection accuracy and disease specificity for T2DM through training on multiple research studies.
