Diversity of Anaplasma species and importance of mixed infections in roe deer from Spain

Susana Remesar et al.

Summary: This study identified the presence of multiple Anaplasma species in roe deer from Spain, with A. phagocytophilum being the most predominant species. Co-infections are common in roe deer, emphasizing the importance of species-specific PCR assays for accurate identification and determining the real prevalence of Anaplasma species. The detection of pathogenic Anaplasma species in roe deer suggests their potential role in the sylvatic cycle of these bacteria and the emergence of clinical anaplasmosis cases.

The first molecular detection of Anaplasma capra in domestic ruminants in the central part of Turkey, with genetic diversity and genotyping of Anaplasma capra

Kursat Altay et al.

Summary: Tick-borne diseases, including the emerging Anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma capra, pose a increasing threat to human and animal health worldwide. This study found the presence of A. capra in domestic ruminants from Turkey, with a low prevalence rate. Different genotypes of A. capra were detected, indicating potential variations in the disease. The emergence of A. capra in Turkey highlights the need for re-evaluation of risk analysis for anaplasmosis in terms of human and animal health.

First Molecular Evidence for the Presence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Naturally Infected Small Ruminants in Tunisia, and Confirmation of Anaplasma ovis Endemicity

Youmna M'ghirbi et al.

Summary: This study developed a duplex PCR assay targeting specific genes (msp2 and msp4) to analyze Anaplasma infections in small ruminants in Tunisia. The results showed that 78.3% of the analyzed animals were infected with Anaplasma, with A. ovis having a higher prevalence than A. phagocytophilum. A. phagocytophilum generally presented as a co-infection with A. ovis.

Distribution of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Domestic Animals and Their Ticks in the Countries of the Mediterranean Basin between 2000 and 2021: A Systematic Review

Baptiste Defaye et al.

Summary: This study provides an inventory and analysis of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in domestic animals in the countries of the Mediterranean Basin. The findings reveal the presence of 90 pathogen species in the region, with 31 tick species and 12 domestic animal species identified. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of monitoring TBPs in islands.

Summary: Ovine anaplasmosis is an emerging disease in Europe spread mainly through tick bites, causing significant economic losses when it spreads rapidly in a naive area. Young animals are particularly susceptible to severe clinical signs, such as severe anaemia and weakness, associated with this disease.

Summary: Tick-borne diseases are a serious public health issue in Europe and a major cause of losses in global livestock production. This review summarizes studies on ticks, tick-borne pathogens, and diseases in Greece, providing information on tick species, important pathogens, prevalence data, and geographic and climatic conditions. Enhanced surveillance is crucial for effective TBD control policies.
