Assessment of Hydrocarbon Degradation Potential in Microbial Communities in Arctic Sea Ice

Angela Peeb et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prokaryotic community structures and genetic potential of hydrocarbon degradation in the metagenomes of seawater, sea ice, and crude oil encapsulating the sea ice of Ofotfjorden. The results showed increased abundances of hydrocarbon-degrading organisms in the crude oil encapsulating sea ice. The metagenome of seawater had a rich variety of hydrocarbon-degradation related functional genes, but the highest counts were found in the clean sea ice metagenome and the lowest in the crude oil encapsulating sea ice.

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for removing phenanthrene from marine sediments using Tween80 as an extracting agent and treating the resulting spent solution in a biochar immobilized-cell bioreactor. The SW process effectively removes phenanthrene, and the subsequent biochemical treatment achieves a high degradation rate.

Md Raihan Uddin et al.

Summary: This study characterized a psychrotrophic bacterial strain RSAP17 isolated from unexplored Arctic soil sample, which showed the capability of producing extracellular lipase. The purified lipase enzyme exhibited optimal activity at 25 degrees C and pH 9, with molecular weight of 103.8 kD. Further research on large-scale production, substrate utilization, and enzymatic kinetics could reveal the potential biotechnological applications of this lipase.

Gayathiri Verasoundarapandian et al.

Summary: The reliance on natural resources, fossil fuels, and crude oil for energy production globally has irreversible impacts, particularly in regions like the Arctic. This paper highlights the importance of understanding bioremediation mechanisms for hydrocarbon pollutants and explores the microbial communities present in the Arctic for degradation processes. It also provides an overview of emerging trends in research on microbial communities in polar marine environments and suggests future research prospects for biodegradation of oil contaminants in cold regions like the Arctic.

Oil Bioremediation in the Marine Environment of Antarctica: A Review and Bibliometric Keyword Cluster Analysis

Nur Nadhirah Zakaria et al.

Summary: Research interest in hydrocarbon bioremediation in the marine environments of Antarctica has been increasing, covering both studies on marine bioremediation and the metabolic pathways of hydrocarbon degradation. However, studies of marine anaerobic degradation remain under-represented compared to those of aerobic degradation. Emerging keywords in recent years include bioprospecting, metagenomic, bioindicator, reflecting changing research foci such as increasing attention to microbial diversity. Studies of microbial genomes using metagenomic approaches or whole genome studies are rapidly increasing and are likely to drive emerging fields in future, including rapid expansion of bioprospecting in diverse fields of biotechnology.

Microbial Community Dynamics during Biodegradation of Crude Oil and Its Response to Biostimulation in Svalbard Seawater at Low Temperature

Hiie Nolvak et al.

Summary: This experimental study aimed to assess the impact of biostimulation on microbial community in oil-contaminated Arctic seawater. Through amplicon-based and shotgun sequencing, as well as genome-resolved metagenomics, the structure and metabolic properties of microbial communities were analyzed. Biostimulation with nutrients resulted in increased prokaryotic abundance, altered bacterial community structure, elevated hydrocarbon degradation genes abundance, and enhanced crude oil biodegradation. However, biostimulation alone may not be sufficient for effective bioremediation in a timely manner.

Bibliometric Analysis of Hydrocarbon Bioremediation in Cold Regions and a Review on Enhanced Soil Bioremediation

How Swen Yap et al.

Summary: Human activities in cold regions rely on petroleum oils for various purposes, leading to accidental oil spills and significant soil pollution. Biological treatments are proposed as an innovative approach to mitigate petroleum hydrocarbon pollution in soils, but are hindered by the slow remediation process in cold regions. Recent biotechnological advancements using biostimulation and bioaugmentation strategies have shown promise in enhancing hydrocarbon removal efficiency under cold conditions.
