Small Produce Farm Environments Can Harbor Diverse Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria spp. Populations

Alexandra Belias et al.

Summary: This study conducted a survey on Listeria diversity on a farm in New York, revealing a significant presence of Listeria and L. monocytogenes in water sources and nearby animal feces. Characterization through PFGE showed persistence and reintroduction of Listeria subtypes, as well as diversity among different samples.

Levels of Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes in Alternative Irrigation Water Vary Based on Water Source on the Eastern Shore of Maryland

Chanelle L. Acheamfour et al.

Summary: This study found clear variations in levels of S. enterica and L. monocytogenes in alternative irrigation water sources on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Pathogen levels were significantly greater in nontidal freshwater river sites and tidal brackish river sites compared to reclaimed water sites. L. monocytogenes levels in water varied based on season.

Environmental dissemination of pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes in flowing surface waters in Switzerland

Susanne Raschle et al.

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes was found in 13% of surface water samples from rivers, streams, and inland canals in Switzerland, with some isolates belonging to hypervirulent clones implicated in listeriosis outbreaks. The presence of L. monocytogenes in river ecosystems may contribute to the dissemination of clinically highly relevant strains to the food chain.

Nationwide genomic atlas of soil-dwelling Listeria reveals effects of selection and population ecology on pangenome evolution

Jingqiu Liao et al.

Summary: The study of 1,854 Listeria isolates from soil in the contiguous United States revealed geographically prevalent phylogroups influenced by environmental factors such as soil moisture, molybdenum, and salinity concentrations. Analysis of whole-genome data showed that cosmopolitan phylogroups with broad habitat ranges had more open pangenomes, weaker linkage disequilibrium, and a large fraction of genes affected by positive selection, indicating that genome flexibility and recombination are driven by adaptation to survive in variable environments.
