Comparative Whole-Genome Analysis of Russian Foodborne Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella Infantis Isolates

Anna Egorova et al.

Summary: In this study, detailed genomic analysis was conducted on 45 multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Infantis isolates from poultry and meat product samples obtained in Russia. The study revealed similar antimicrobial susceptibility profiles among the isolates, as well as the presence of multiple types of plasmids in some isolates. Additionally, several virulence genes were identified. These findings contribute to the understanding of the comparative genomics of Infantis Salmonella circulating in Russia and have important implications for the epidemiological surveillance of foodborne Salmonella isolates and investigations of Salmonella outbreaks.

Whole genome sequencing for the risk assessment of probiotic lactic acid bacteria

Xianqi Peng et al.

Summary: The use of probiotic bacteria in foods and fermented products can have positive effects on human and animal health. However, there is increasing concern about their safety and potential adverse effects. Currently, in vitro assays are the primary method for evaluating probiotic properties, but they may not be sufficient for high-throughput strain risk assessment. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of individual LAB strains can provide valuable genetic information for assessing safety and understanding strain differences. WGS-based bioinformatics analyses are suggested as an ideal and cost-effective approach for in silico microbial risk evaluation and improving our understanding of LAB strains for food safety and probiotic property evaluation.

Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles and Genetic Typing of Salmonella Serovars from Chicken Embryos in China

Yaohui Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Salmonella strains isolated from chicken embryos in Henan province exhibited high resistance to ampicillin (66.67%) and sulfisoxazole (66.67%), with 67.5% of strains being multidrug resistant and 21.67% confirmed as ESBLs positive. Resistance was found to be serovar-dependent, with ESBLs positive strains showing more multi-resistance than ESBLs negative strains.

Genomic Characterization of Salmonella enterica Isolates From Retail Meat in Beijing, China

Na Lyu et al.

Summary: A comparative genomic analysis of 341 Salmonella enterica isolates from retail meat in sixteen districts of Beijing in 2017 revealed that the dominant serotype was S. Enteritidis, with prevalent phages including Salmonella phage 118970 sal3 and Gifsy-2. Various plasmid replicons such as IncFII(S), IncX1, and IncFIB(S) were common in these isolates. Additionally, a total of 88 different antimicrobial resistance genes were found in these isolates.

Resistance to widely-used disinfectants and heavy metals and cross resistance to antibiotics in Escherichia coli isolated from pigs, pork and pig carcass

Jiratchaya Puangseree et al.

Summary: The majority of Escherichia coli isolated from pigs, pork, and pig carcasses in Thailand were multidrug resistant. There was limited development of resistance to disinfectants and heavy metals, except for triclosan. Cross-resistance was observed between certain disinfectants and antibiotics, highlighting the role of multidrug efflux systems. The presence of disinfectants and heavy metals played a significant role in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Experimental co-infection of variant infectious bursal disease virus and fowl adenovirus serotype 4 increases mortality and reduces immune response in chickens

A-Hui Xu et al.

Summary: Co-infection of variant IBDV ZD-2018-1 and FAdV-4 HB1501 significantly enhances the pathogenicity of FAdV-4 and reduces the immune response in chickens, with delayed expression of certain cytokines and lower antibody response levels observed in coinfected chickens compared to those infected with FAdV-4 alone. These findings lay the groundwork for further exploration of the interaction mechanism in IBDV and FAdV-4 co-infection.
