Differential Bacterial Predation by Free-Living Amoebae May Result in Blooms of Legionella in Drinking Water Systems

Mohamed Shaheen et al.

Summary: The research shows that water-related FLA species preferentially feed on Escherichia coli when the preferred bacterial food-sources are limited, although they also support the intracellular growth of Legionella pneumophila. Moreover, once Legionella pneumophila are intracellular, they inhibit the digestion of co-occurring E. coli within the same trophozoites. These findings suggest that FLA's feeding preference may lead to an increase in Legionella abundance and facilitate the internalization of Legionella into FLA within engineered water systems.

Growth phase-dependent surface properties of Legionella pneumophila and their role in adhesion to stainless steel coated QCM-D sensors

S. Ariyadasa et al.

Summary: The cell surface hydrophobicity and charge of Legionella pneumophila vary with growth phase, affecting their mobility and persistence in engineered water systems. Hydrophobicity steadily increases during the lifecycle, with stationary phase cells showing greater adhesion to stainless steel. There is no significant change in cell surface charge throughout the lifecycle.

Surface-Modified Biopolymer Microparticles: A Potential Surrogate for Studying Legionella pneumophila Attachment to Biofilms in Engineered Water Systems

Sujani Ariyadasa et al.

Summary: A novel biopolymer surrogate mimicking Legionella pneumophila was developed and tested in laboratory experiments, showing similar behavior to Pseudomonas fluorescens. The surrogate and L. pneumophila biofilm attachment was significantly reduced in the presence of chlorine, indicating potential for better control of legionellosis risks.
