Human Erythroid Progenitors Are Directly Infected by SARS-CoV-2: Implications for Emerging Erythropoiesis in Severe COVID-19 Patients

Hector Huerga Encabo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that severe COVID-19 patients in intensive care experience a significant decline in hemoglobin levels but an increase in circulating nucleated red cells, indicating a possible induction of stress erythropoiesis by SARS-CoV-2 infection. The research also shows that ACE2 expression peaks during erythropoiesis, making erythroid progenitors susceptible to infection by the virus. Furthermore, the study identifies early erythroid progenitors as the primary target cells for SARS-CoV-2 infection during erythropoiesis, highlighting how the virus can impact the clinical symptoms of severe COVID-19 patients.

Erythroid precursors and progenitors suppress adaptive immunity and get invaded by SARS-CoV-2

Shima Shahbaz et al.

Summary: The study found that COVID-19 patients have significantly enriched CD71+ erythroid precursors/progenitors in their blood circulation, which exhibit distinctive immunosuppressive properties and a strong negative correlation with T and B cell proportions. The expansion of these cells is negatively correlated with hemoglobin levels and they can be infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Sex Matters: Physiological Abundance of Immuno-Regulatory CD71+Erythroid Cells Impair Immunity in Females

Siavash Mashhouri et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant sexual dimorphism in CECs, with female mice and human females exhibiting higher levels of CECs compared to males. CECs, particularly their progenitors CD45+CECs, showed enhanced immunomodulatory properties, suppressing T cell activation and proliferation through L-arginine depletion. The abundance of CECs in anemic mice and post-menstrual cycle women may contribute to immune suppression and susceptibility to infections like Bordetella pertussis.
