Antioxidant Defenses in the Human Eye: A Focus on Metallothioneins

Ana Alvarez-Barrios et al.

Summary: The human eye is greatly affected by both internal and external oxidants, leading to oxidative stress and potential eye diseases. Metallothioneins (MTs) are a family of proteins with antioxidant properties and cell-mediated functions that play a crucial role in capturing and neutralizing free radicals in the eye.

Renoprotective Effects of DPP-4 Inhibitors

Daiji Kawanami et al.

Summary: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) globally. Dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4 inhibitors are commonly used in treating patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) by reducing glucose levels through inhibition of incretin degradation. Clinical and experimental studies have shown that DPP-4 inhibitors have beneficial effects on DKD, independent of their glucose-lowering abilities, mediated by anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative stress properties.

The Chemistry of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Revisited: Outlining Their Role in Biological Macromolecules (DNA, Lipids and Proteins) and Induced Pathologies

Summary: Living species are constantly exposed to oxidants, leading to oxidative stress and disease. The induction of oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between radical species and antioxidant defense systems, which can damage cellular biomolecules.

Neuromodulation Induced by Sitagliptin: A New Strategy for Treating Diabetic Retinopathy

Hugo Ramos et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that topical administration of sitagliptin prevents the downregulation of crucial presynaptic proteins in the retinas of diabetic mice, indicating a potential neuroprotective effect of sitagliptin in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases involving neurodegeneration/synaptic abnormalities.

Therapeutic Effects of Fenofibrate Nano-Emulsion Eye Drops on Retinal Vascular Leakage and Neovascularization

Li Huang et al.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are leading causes of blindness, and lack non-invasive drug treatments. However, the development of a novel nano-emulsion fenofibrate eye drop formulation shows promising therapeutic effects for both diseases by delivering significantly higher drug concentrations to the retina/vitreous compared to systemic administration. This new approach has the potential to alleviate retinal inflammation and vascular leakage, as well as reduce laser-induced choroidal neovascularization in AMD and DR models.
