Metformin prevents methylglyoxal-induced apoptosis by suppressing oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of metformin (MET) on apoptosis induced by methylglyoxal (MGO) in diabetic vascular complications. It is found that MET can prevent cell apoptosis induced by MGO by suppressing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidative capacity through ROS-mediated PI3K/Akt and Nrf2/HO-1 pathways.

Malonyldialdehyde- and Methylglyoxal-Induced Suppression of Endothelium-Mediated Dilation of Rat Iliac Artery in Response to Elevation of Blood Flow

Summary: The study found that, in addition to DGA, MDA and MG also selectively inhibit endothelium-mediated flow-dependent dilation. These aldehydes may lead to endothelial dysfunction by disrupting the structure of the endothelial glycocalyx.
